Classroom Policies and Procedures

Grading

In First grade we do not give number or percentage grades. Papers are marked with a check or check minus to indicate degree of mastery. Math tests will be scored with a percentage grade.

Daily Practice- Most of the work in first grade is considered practice. A happy face, star or sticker means your child understood most of the concept practiced. If your child does not understand an important concept, I will reteach the concept or ask for a redo. The goal is for your child to understand each concept, so he/she can perform well on the formal assessments.

Formal Assessments-At Pine Grove we teach to the Colorado State Standards. Your child’s work will be evaluated on his/her proficiency in meeting standards.

In reading and math- 80% is considered proficient in most areas.

Principal Exams and Sight Words need a 90% for proficiency.

Behavior Management

In our classroom, I reward good behavior. Students have a sticker chart that will come home when it is filled.

Snacks

We will have snack time every day. Please make sure to send in a healthy treat with your child. Your child should also have a water bottle that is easy open/close.

* We have a NUT FREE classroom.

Principal's Exams

Principal's exams are given once a week to help your child memorize their basic addition and subtraction facts, and do so at a quick pace. Being able to do computation quickly will help your child excel in other areas in math.

Birthdays

Birthdays are big events for first graders. Students may celebrate by bringing in a small treat to share with classmates. If you choose to do this below are some guidelines.

  • Birthday treats should not be food. An option might be a small item, like an eraser or pencil.

  • There are 19 students in our class this year.

Many parents ask if I can distribute invitations for home birthday parties. I am happy to let your child do this, if everyone is invited. It is terrible to feel left out. If you want to have a smaller party that is fine, but please don't bring those invitations to school.

I am not allowed to pass out a class list or contact information.
