Science Learning Expectations for Second Grade

Physical ScienceRecognize that matter exists as different substances that have observable different properties.
Life ScienceUnderstand that organisms depend on their habitat to satisfy needs; recognize that each plant or animal has different structures or behaviors that serve different functions; collaborate with other students in developing scientific explanations about how organisms depend on their habitat.
Earth and Space ScienceUnderstand that some events on Earth occur quickly:  others can occur very slowly.  Consider how wind and water can change the shape of the land and use models to show the shape and these changes to the land.
Throughout the 2nd Grade, you may find students...
Conducting investigations to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.
Analyzing data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.
Identifying how an environment and/or the behaviors of a population help organisms survive within a habitat.
Using  evidence to develop a scientific explanation about how organisms depend on their habitat.
Using information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or slowly.
Comparing multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land.
Developing a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area and obtaining information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid.
