In this month’s GT news you will find a book recommendation, information about conferences and information about an upcoming event at Ponderosa High School that may be of interest to GT families.
I recently finished the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. As we all work to raise healthy and happy kids, this book provides some food for thought on helping your children deal with stress/anxiety in our increasingly demanding world. Anxiety has become an increasingly prevalent issue in today's society, affecting individuals across all age groups. Among the most vulnerable are gifted and talented students, who often experience heightened stress due to high expectations, both external and internal. These students may struggle with perfectionism, pressure to perform, and fear of failure, which can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. The impact of anxiety on these students can hinder their academic performance, mental well-being, and overall development. In The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt explores how societal changes and technological advancements have contributed to the rise in anxiety, particularly among younger generations. Haidt's insights provide a deeper understanding of the unique pressures faced by gifted students and offer strategies for managing anxiety in a world that seems to demand more and more. This book is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of anxiety in modern society and how it affects our youth.
Conferences at Franktown Elementary are being held on March 6 and 11th. When you call the office to schedule an appointment please mention that your child works with me so the conference gets on my schedule. I have 39 students so I may not be able to attend all conferences (but will do my best!). If I miss you and you would like to talk about your child’s progress, goals or any concerns please email me at rashields@dcsdk12.org
Finally, Ponderosa High School is hosting a GT Showcase night. The Gifted and Talented students at PHS share their talents and passions with the Ponderosa community. I have attached the flyer with more information. This is a great opportunity for our elementary students to see what they have to look forward to and for parents to see where their elementary kids are headed!
As always I am available to you if you have any questions or concerns about your GT student.
