Topic 12
Subtract Within 1,000 Using Strategies
Topic 10 extends your child’s understanding of subtraction to 3-digit numbers using models and strategies. Your child will explain why subtraction strategies work using place value and properties of operations.
We’re focusing on understanding the math, not memorizing steps. Being able to explain their thinking is just as important as the answer.
Our goal is to help students understand that there’s more than one way to solve a problem—and that it’s important to show their thinking and choose the strategy that works best for them.
Ways to Support At Home:
-Talk through thinking:
Ask, “How did you figure that out?” or “What did you subtract first?”
-Encourage multiple strategies:
If your child gets the right answer a different way than you would—celebrate it!
--Mental math moments:
While shopping or driving, ask:
“What is 100 or 10 less than ___?”
If your child is still working on adding fluently within 20, keep practicing fluency facts! This foundation will set them up for future success as they build on math concepts.

Topic 11
Use Models + Strategies to Subtract Tens
Topic 11 focuses on subtracting multiples of 10 less than 100. Your child will use concrete models, drawings, properties of operations, and strategies based on place value. It is important that your child can explain how they use different strategies to solve the subtraction problems.
Ways to Support at Home:
-You can connect the math in this topic to everyday experiences. When you find a situation in which a multiple of ten needs to be subtracted from a two-digit number, ask your child to help find the answer. For example, if you are making breakfast, you might say, “We started with 43 blueberries and put 20 blueberries on your plate. How many blueberries are left?” Encourage your child to use one tool or method to first solve the problem and then another to check the answer.
-Give your child a number and then ask them to mentally subtract ten more
