2nd Grade
Topic 12
In 2nd grade math, students learn to measure and compare lengths using standard units like inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They practice estimating lengths before measuring and learn how to use rulers or tape measures accurately. Students also compare objects to see which is longer or shorter and solve simple real-world problems using measurement, helping them understand how size, distance, and length are used every day. At home, parents can support learning by measuring toys, furniture, or plants, asking children to estimate lengths first, and comparing objects in fun, hands-on ways.
Ways to Support At Home:
-Measure everyday objects – Use a ruler, tape measure, or measuring tape to measure toys, books, furniture, or household items.
-Estimate first – Before measuring, ask your child to guess how long or tall something is. Compare their estimate to the actual measurement.
-Use different units – Practice measuring in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. Talk about when each unit might be useful.
-Play measurement games – Challenge your child to “find something that is about 12 inches long” or “which object is closer to 1 meter?”

Topic 13
Money and Time
In this topic, students learn to tell and write time to the hour and half-hour using analog and digital clocks. They explore days, weeks, and months to understand how time is organized. For money, students identify coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters), count their values, and solve simple money-related word problems. The focus is on recognizing coins, understanding their values, and using them to solve real-world problems, as well as reading clocks and understanding the passage of time.
Ways to Support at Home:
-Practice telling time on wall clocks or watches; ask questions like, “What time is lunch?”
-Play coin games or help children count change during small purchases.
-Use everyday routines to talk about time (morning, afternoon, bedtime) and introduce simple schedules
