2nd Grade
Topic 13
In Topic 13, students explore and deepen their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes. We focus on helping students recognize, describe, and compare shapes based on their attributes.
Throughout this topic, students will:
Identify and describe 2D shapes (like triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons) by the number of sides and angles
Explore 3D shapes (such as cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres) and describe their faces, edges, and vertices
Sort and classify shapes based on their attributes
Build shapes using manipulatives and drawings to strengthen spatial reasoning
Understand how shapes can be combined or broken apart into other shapes
Ways to Support At Home:
-Looking for shapes in everyday objects
-Asking your child to describe shapes they see using math words
-Describe a shape's attributes and have your student name and draw it.
1st Grade
Topic 14
Reason with Shapes and Attributes
In Topic 14, students are learning all about shapes and their attributes in a fun and hands-on way! This unit helps build early geometry skills by encouraging students to explore, identify, and create shapes.
Throughout this topic, students will:
Identify and name 2D shapes such as circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles
Describe shapes by their attributes (number of sides and corners/vertices)
Build and draw shapes using a variety of materials
Combine shapes to make new shapes and take shapes apart into smaller ones
Begin exploring equal shares by dividing shapes into two or four equal parts
Students are also practicing using math language like “sides,” “corners,” and “equal parts” to explain their thinking.
Ways to Support at Home:
-Finding and naming shapes around your home or outside
-Asking your child to describe shapes they see
-Drawing or building shapes together
-Talking about sharing items (like food) into equal parts
This topic builds a strong foundation for future geometry learning while encouraging creativity and problem-solving!
