A Guide for Families
Following directions is an important part of a successful art class. It helps students stay safe, feel confident, care for materials, and have more time to be creative. Following directions also builds responsibility, independence, and strong learning habits that students can use in every subject.
What Following Directions Looks Like in Art Class
👀 1. Listen and Look
Students stop what they are doing, look toward the teacher or demonstration, and listen quietly while directions are being given.
🙋 2. Ask Questions
Students ask questions when they are unsure about a direction or need something explained again. Asking before beginning can prevent frustration and mistakes.
🖌️ 3. Follow the Steps
Art projects often have several steps. Students complete the steps in the correct order and use tools and materials the way they were demonstrated.
⭐ 4. Get Started and Stay Focused
After directions are given, students begin working and use their art time wisely. They try to solve small problems independently and stay focused on their artwork.
🧹 5. Follow Cleanup Directions
Being an artist also means taking care of our shared space! Students return supplies to the correct places, clean their work area, and follow our classroom cleanup procedures.
💬 6. Listen, Reflect & Share
Students listen respectfully when classmates are sharing, participate in discussions and reflections, and give kind and helpful feedback.
Why Following Directions Matters
When students follow directions in art class, they:
Build confidence and independence
Learn responsibility and respect
Practice listening and problem-solving skills
Use art tools and materials safely and correctly
Help create a positive classroom environment
Allow everyone to have more time to create!
🏠 How Families Can Help at Home
You can strengthen these same skills at home by:
Giving your child simple two- or three-step directions
Encouraging them to listen to all the steps before beginning
Asking them to repeat directions back to make sure they understand
Encouraging them to try independently before asking for help
Praising their effort, responsibility, and persistence
❤️ Thank You, Families!
Thank you for partnering with me to help our young artists become responsible, confident, and independent learners. When we work together, students can learn, grow, create, and shine!
