Homework each week will consist of completing 1-2 UFLI passages. Students will be expected to highlight the observed learning target and illustrate the passage. Students should hear the passage read first, then read on their own, and an additional read with you or alone. 3 reads should take place. Additionally, students should practice the week's high-frequency word phrase and orthographically map the observed HFW. We will hold "1st Grade Literacy Nights" to model this routine and help answer any questions. Additionally, we are encouraging students to work on Lexia Core 5 for about 10 minutes a night.
Lexia is a reading program that works with students at their level on specific skills they need to become stronger readers. I do hold a weekly "Lexia Unit Race" in the classroom, where students compete to have the most units by the end of day on Friday for a chance to win prizes such as lunch in the classroom, Yogurt Beach gift cards, Starbucks Treats, etc. It has been a fun way to motivate all learners! Your child should be completing about 5 untis a day if they are on task in class and completing their homework each night.
Zearn (math program) is also an option but not a required homework assignment. Students are expected (and given time for) to complete 4 Zearn lessons per week.. If you find that your child is not keeping up in class then Zearn at home is a great way to support them. Your child tracks this progress in their data notebooks and I do send home status checks every few weeks to keep you updated as well.
Thank you for your support in this area! If you have any questions please contact me!
