On January 13, 2022, Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama State Board of Education officially recognized January as Gifted Education Month (GEM). On this special day, gifted students from Montgomery Public Schools and Pike Road Schools addressed Dr. Mackey and Alabama State Board Members on the importance of gifted education and its impact on their learning.

may be advanced in one subject-area while not being advanced in others,
may not be academically gifted, thus, not enrolled in advanced classes
needs an individualized education
