Background

During the SLOCOG Board meeting on October 4th, 2023, San Luis Obispo City Council Member and Board Vice President Andy Pease read the Road to Zero (RTZ) proclamation alongside some of the county’s top public safety leaders.

The Board of Directors then unanimously approved the Road to Zero–Regional Road Safety Target, which triggered the formation of a Regional Road Safety Steering Committee which will develop a Regional Road Safety Action Plan.

The goal of SLOCOG Road to Zero is to eliminate regional traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2050. The Road to Zero will work toward this goal through the framework of the Safe System Approach.

Every year about 30 people lose their lives on San Luis Obispo County roadways, and another 140 suffer serious life changing injuries. The Regional Safety Action Plan will be a critical component in evolving our roadway network into a safe mobility network. The Plan will help us formulate the best approaches, philosophies, and programs to meet our current and future road safety needs, while making important safety investments.

The plan will establish a regional vision and goals, include holistic and inclusive public engagement, and conduct an equity analysis to enhance locally adopted safety plans. The Action Plan is a requirement for Federal infrastructure capital through the SS4A program.

The Plan will also identify non-infrastructure safety measures to promote education, enforcement, outreach, and other strategies to eliminate fatal and severe injuries in traffic.
