Make Canvas Content Available Offline
The following are the instructions for downloading course content from Canvas. Understand that some content will not download and content that relies on an Internet connection will not work in offline mode. Once you complete your coursework, you will need an Internet connection to submit your work to your teacher. Download time is affected by both the size of the download file and Internet speed. Some files may take several minutes to download.
YOUR DEVICE MUST BE ONLINE FOR THIS STEP
Log in to Canvas
Go to the Canvas course that you want to download.
To download course content, you must be on a Modules page; Click on Modules.
Click on the Export Course Content button in the upper right
The Exported Package HIstory window will open and Canvas will begin processing the export file for all published content in that Module.
The Download Status Box will appear in the lower right of your screen.
The course content will export as a .zip file.
Once the download is complete, click Show in Folder from the status box, or
Go to your Files Manager on your device.
From this point forward, you may work offline.
The .zip file should be located in the Downloads folder under My Files. If you don’t see it, go to Recent and sort by Date Modified with the arrow pointing down. The .zip file should be at or near the top of the list.
To unzip the Exported file: Double click on the .zip file to open > Drag this file to the Downloads folder
You can see the progress of the unzipping process in the lower right-hand corner of your File Manager window.
Open the folder with the course name that you just unzipped. There should be two files inside: Viewer and Index.html.
Open the Index.html file.
This will open up the contents of your course file without using the Internet.
Before logging off the Internet, it is recommended that you open the module from the beginning and follow through the course by clicking the Next buttons. Click links to documents and download those documents to make them available offline.
Some videos, particularly YouTube videos, may play while online and not be available when offline. Teacher created videos that were embedded in the lesson should be available in the Uploaded Media file (Viewer > Files > Uploaded Media)
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides will open. Complete the assignment in the doc while offline. (you will see the message near the document title saying that you are Working offline)
Once the assignment is complete, go to File > Print > Destination = Save as PDF. Once you are back online you can send/share these documents back to your teacher.
Quizzes assigned by your teacher will not be available in offline mode. However, you can take quizzes on your phone using the Canvas Student app.
NOTE: If the assignment is a Google Doc, Google Sheet, or Google Slide, right click on the file and select make available offline.
