Xiqiao and Dongqiao neighborhoods in Yongkang District, Tainan City, derive their names from bridges built by early residents over Shitou Creek and Chaitougang Creek. Since the Ming-Zheng period, these bridges have witnessed local development and once served as key passages to Xingang (present-day Xinshi). According to legend, the Dutch built arched brick bridges here, one of which was named “Kalong Bridge,” leaving a lasting historical mark.
Over time, the Da Ciao area evolved from undeveloped land into a thriving community. In the 1980s, rapid population growth created an urgent need for schools. Da Ciao Elementary School was officially established on August 1, 1985, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held the following year, marking the beginning of its educational mission.
In its early years, the school faced severe challenges. With many students but few classrooms, lessons were held in borrowed spaces or even at construction sites, and facilities were extremely basic. Despite these hardships, teachers and students worked together with perseverance, fostering a spirit of resilience and determination that has become the most treasured legacy of Da Ciao Elementary School.
Forty years have passed, and through the flow of time, Da Ciao Elementary School has quietly renewed itself. In earlier days, classrooms were simple; chalk dust rose gently as eager eyes sought knowledge.
On the playground, soil flew beneath running feet, and children’s laughter echoed through the air. Today, every classroom is air-conditioned, making learning feel like spring all year round. Traditional blackboards have been replaced with washable surfaces, leaving clean and clear traces of thought.
With each student using a tablet, smart learning now knows no boundaries. The campus grounds are lush and green, enhanced by inclusive playgrounds where joy knows no limits and childhood remains carefree. From humble brick-and-mortar beginnings to the integration of modern technology, Da Ciao Elementary School carries forward its original mission while envisioning the future.
Memories of the past remain, new faces shine in the present, and this campus will continue to write its own brilliant chapter.
