In May 1749, Handel approached the Foundling Hospital's governors and offered to conduct a benefit concert. The program included the very first performance of Handel's "specially written" Foundling Hospital Anthem including The Hallelujah Chorus, which opens with a text adapted from Psalm 41 – "Blessed are they that consider the poor and needy … they deliver the poor that crieth, the fatherless," in a clear appeal to the audience to support the work of the hospital.
DCINY intends to carry on Handel’s vision for the Hallelujah Chorus and contribute a portion of sales to The Thomas Coram Foundation for Children (formerly the Foundling Hospital), now known simply as CORAM.
