To promote youth volunteerism and active citizenship, Lighthouse Day, a project which seeks to hold workshops for student leaders in Davao, was held at DCHS V. Mapa, July 2, 2024.
The project was proposed by DCHS Most Outstanding High School Graduate (MOHSG) candidate Sean Rupert Duban-Dupa and bagged the “Best Project” award in the recently concluded MOHSG 57 by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Davao.
“Throughout my SC journey, I’ve always wanted to create activities like Lighthouse Day. While I am not in DCHS anymore, I’ll make sure to keep DCHS in mind whenever The Lighthouse Club creates events like these!” Dupa said while also thanking everyone who helped him throughout his SC and MOHSG journeys.
Lighthouse Day partnered up with JCI Davao, Called to Rescue PH, iVolunteer PH, and Student’s Environmental Alliance Davao (SEAD) to gather 60 student leaders from 15 Davao schools such as DCHS V. Mapa, Davao City National High School, Davao Wisdom Academy, Brokenshire College, Jose Maria College, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School, and more.
Representatives from each NGO delivered their platforms and shared their advocacies, encouraging students to join their causes and orient them about volunteering opportunities locally and nationally.
Called to Rescue’s president and founder, Dr. Cyndi Romine, shared brief talks about their cause to battle human and sex trafficking, along with their OIC, Anthony Pangilinan, who gave advice on prioritization.
“[We] hope that with our presence here [for Lighthouse Day], we can encourage the youth to report, then to know that they can report to Called to Rescue and be aware of their community. We really want to save the youth from abuse,” a representative said.
Apart from Called to Rescue, JCI Davao shared steps to active citizenship and project planning and imparted the message of “Active Leaders Creating Impact” in their pursuit to share the principles of global leadership to the youth.
Moreover, iVolunteer PH taught the delegates about time, talent, and treasure volunteering, along with their website (ivolunteer.com.ph) that may be used as an avenue to look for opportunities nationwide, whereas SEAD shared their advocacies and initiatives for environment protection and preservation, extending invites for their applications in July.
Aside from the talks, the delegates engaged in team-building activities and a project proposal-making event, assisted by their MOHSG team leaders.
