Phonemic Awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in words. Students will be able to recognize and produce rhyming words, blend and segment 2-3 sounds.
Students will learn two-three new sight words each week. By the end of the year, students will be expected to master 80 sight words. To show mastery of each sight word, students must be able to read the word in a text and apply in their writing. Students will take home sight word lists throughout the school year for parents to help support their child's learning at home. The following documents contains the current Kindergarten Sight Word list as well as strategies to teach sight and other vocabulary words.

Students will be able to identify characters and setting, use illustrations to tell the story, visualize, and retell the beginning middle and end of the story. Unknown words can impact students' comprehension of the text. The following document includes reading strategies for decoding unknown words and asking comprehension questions.
Students will be able to write 2-3 complete sentences by the end of the year. Correct letter formation will help to ease writing and minimize frustration when formulating a complete thought. The documents provided include the handwriting poster, home writing strategies, and unit descriptions.
Students will be able to count to 100 and write numbers to 20. Students will learn simple addition and story problems.

Subitizing builds a solid foundation of number sense that will lead to an increase fact fluency in the future. Subitizing is the ability to 'see' a small amount of objects and know how many there are without counting.
