6th Grade

Parent Corner

Welcome to Mrs. “Math” Moore’s 6th Grade Parent Corner!

Mathematics instruction has certainly changed since we were in school! This page is meant to help YOU understand what we’re doing at school and how to best help your child throughout the school year.

Today, my math instruction involves a hybrid of fostering both procedural and conceptual thinking.

The procedural method (the way you were likely exclusively taught) is the learning of series of rules, shortcuts and algorithms. With this approach, (if done properly), we can usually arrive at solutions quickly, but with little or no understanding of why the algorithm works. Fact fluency is valuable piece of this methodology.

The conceptual method is about fostering connections within your own background knowledge. The use of concrete and abstract maniulatives is a huge part of this methodology. Even though this approach often appears more open-ended and lengthy, students achieve deeper understandings of content with lasting effects.

Over the past few decades, technology has completely transformed our world; mathematics education has had to follow suit! Computers can handle the computation, we need creative problem solvers! Our math series, Sadlier Math contains the perfect blend of these two schools of thought. "The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education." The Sadlier Math curriculum builds strength in all 8 of these standards, allowing the student to develop a confident approach to any real-world mathematics application. Combined with some project-based experiences and a little “math magic” we are sure to have a great year!

Archdiocese of Detroit Standards - "Archdiocese of Detroit students, teachers, and schools are held to a high standard of continuous improvement by a variety of assessment tools, agencies and internal inspection. Catholic schools are not governed by state agencies and are not assessed by them. We will continue to ensure that the education provided by Detroit Archdiocese schools prepares our students to be personally successful, demonstrate complete personal development and experience unsurpassed academic achievement."
