Asynchronous Learning

Asynchronous Learning Tools

Research recommends making curriculum available in multiple formats. Some examples might include:

  • Short readings or articles
  • Videos created by the teacher or pulled from an online curriculum such as your textbook's online resources or these museum virtual tours
  • Digital worksheets or hyperdocs distributed and collected via Google Docs or Seesaw activities
  • Student discussion boards*, hosted on Google Classroom or Flipgrid
  • Journals or diaries to document student progress

Helpful tips:

  • Try to avoid "app-hopping." If you assign an app for one subject, try to move another activity "offline" that day.
  • HGSE Project Zero's Thinking Routines make excellent prompts for independent and asynchronous learning: click here
  • Google Education has compiled a great resource about how to leverage Google apps when teaching remotely: click here
  • Online education services such as Khan Academy, Study.com, or PurpleMath can be helpful resources for students who need a second summary of material. However, these should not be a student's primary source of instruction, unless that is typical to your classroom teaching methods.

* Please remember to post a reminder of digital citizenship expectations in any student digital forum. Here is an example: "Although we are in an online environment, please remember that online=offline and our classroom rules and honor code apply. We want to be respectful of one another, take care of our devices and class tools, and let an adult know if something doesn't seem right." You can find our DCD AUPromise here.
