At the middle school level, gifted students are served in conjunction with high-achieving students in advanced content classes, and the classes are taught by gifted-endorsed teachers. However, because of gifted students’ specific needs, a specialized curriculum will be in place. Classroom teachers may use pre-assessment strategies along with curriculum compacting in order to generate more time for gifted students to participate in both independent and collaborative problem-based activities and projects grounded in authentic learning. Teachers may also use comprehensive units that include all or most subject areas that are connected by universal themes. The gifted-endorsed classroom teachers will act as facilitators of learning.
