Mrs. Hoos |  6th Grade Humanities  |  Ascent Classical Academy Douglas County

ABOUT ME

Mrs. Hoos has a Bachelor's Degree in history from The Master's University and pursued her education credential at Biola University in La Mirada, California.  She has been a passionate supporter of classical education for over thirty years.  In addition to teaching her own three sons,  she assisted in the start-up of two classical schools, provided support to existing schools nationwide through the Classical Christian Schooling Network, and before coming to Ascent, taught at a classical Christian school in Highlands Ranch. Mrs. Hoos loves to learn, and is considering pursuing a master's degree in the near future.  She is mother to three sons ,Grammie to  four grandsons, and one beautiful little granddaughter, and is expecting a second grandaughter in mid-December.  She and her husband currently reside in Parker, CO.

EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY

Her educational philosophy can best be summarized as follows:  a classical education is the best education for every student. It provides learners with a solid foundation.  It teaches  them how to think critically rather than telling them what to think, and it equips the learner to present his or her opinions based on logical reasoning, supported by what is true, good, and beautiful.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO

Mrs. Hoos favorite part of each new school year is guiding a new group of  students through the geography and the history of Ancient Greece and Rome, exploring the relationship between Ancient Greece and Rome and the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, examining briefly the time period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the 1700's, and learning about industrialization in both the UK and America, the inventions  created during this period, and the impact industrialization has had on immigration here in the United States.    Students will close out the year learning about the various reform movements in England and in the United States in the early 1900's.

Watching students develop their writing skills alongside what they're studying in literature and history, and  being given a bird's-eye view of the effect their reading is having on their character development  delights her soul.

Mrs. Hoos is planning to incorporate an excellent small tome entitled, "American Exceptionalism" by Charles Murray into student history studies this year.  She will be introducing students to what the term means and what it doesn't mean during the first two weeks of school.

Mrs. Hoos is currently enrolled in a course on World Literature and has recently completed reading and a discussion on the Epic of Gilgamesh.  Her current reading for pleasure books include The Golden Princess and the Moon by Anna Maria Mendell, Deeper Heaven:  A Reader's Guide to C. S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy by Christiana Hale, and a compilation of Arthurian stories edited by Katerina Kern on the Legends of the Round Table.  She is also engaged in reading in bits and pieces The Sweet and the Bitter:  Death and Dying in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings by Amy Amendt-Raduege and A Question of Time:  J. R. R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie.  Anything by any of the Inklings interests her.

GINA REPKE

About Me

I am a native of Colorado. I have lived in Fort Collins, Eaton, Glenwood Springs, Fruita, Denver,  Centennial, and now Lone Tree. We lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for a short 10 months, but we decided that Colorado is our home. I live with my husband, 9 year old son, and my cuddly cat. I enjoy crafts and cross stitch in my free time.  I love admiring the beauty of nature and hiking. My favorite flowers are roses. My favorite color has always been purple. I like to have the occasional movie night with my family.  My work background includes working in retail, geriatric nurse, stay at home mom, and now a teaching assistant.

What I am Looking Forward To:

The staff at Ascent Classical Academy have been incredibly kind and caring in educating our son since he was in second grade. My husband is teaching music at Ascent this school year. I am excited to be with my family at work and home. I love reading interesting stories, so I look forward to reading what the students create in their imaginations. I look forward to a new work environment and learning more about classical education.

Mrs. Smelker

About Me

I'm Mrs. Smelker and I am the TA for Tuesdays and Thursdays this school year.  I am married to my wonderful husband, Keith,  whom I met in Ohio before we got married over 16 years ago.  We have three children, one of which is in 7th grade here at Ascent. While most of our family's life has been lived in Denver, we spent 5 of those years living in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Even though we left that city, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

I hold a B.S. in Architecture from THE Ohio State University. After college I worked for a couple years in the field before deciding to stay home with our kids.  As my kids grew in age and independence I started substitute teaching and found that I enjoy education quite a bit too.

In 2020, Our family chose to homeschool for a few years which became my introduction to Classical Education.  Upon returning to the Denver area in 2022 we enrolled our children here at Ascent, and soon after I began working here part time.

In my free time I like to run, bike or walk on the highline canal, volunteer at my church, ski, read books, or spend time with friends and family.

My favorite aspects of classical education are the quality literature and the love of history that permeate much of the curriculum and classroom dialogue.  The quality is high and the ideas are complex and thought provoking.  Works that show the nuance of the human condition provide a worthy task for young minds to dwell upon and consider.

What I'm looking forward to:

I am looking forward to getting to know each of the students in our class and seeing them grow in loving what is good. I love the unique opportunity we have as educators to see and celebrate their personal growth in character and fortitude throughout the year.

TEACHER FAVORITES

what is your favorite book?

Dante's Divine Comedy is my favorite classic book, followed closely by Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy.  The intricacy of the Comedy and what it teaches of the human condition is awe-inspiring.

A modern favorite is The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, and I am absolutely in love with Aslan.  I love this story simply because it is beautiful.

A brief (3-5 sentences) note on your favorite book and why.

What is your favorite subject?

My favorite subjects are history, literature, and composition, and I am thrilled this year to be able to communicate to a new classroom of students the truth, goodness, and beauty inherent in each.

What do you love about ascent?

Ascent is dedicated to encouraging students to seek out truth, to do what is good, and to love what is beautiful.  I can think of no higher aims than these.  A student who has learned to hold these transcendent values in high esteem and who has been taught how to search for and practice them with mind and heart will be an honorable and happy adult.

What is your favorite Game?

My favorite game is probably chess, because it develops analytical thinking skills.
