Some more things for us to think about....
Noonuccal was visiting as a guest of the Chinese government in 1984, so would have been closely policed. It must have been strange to experience a dominant authoritarian host. Also, as an obviously darker woman she would have stood out to the Chinese people who, frequently at that time, were negative towards darker foreigners (in particular the uneducated people). Perhaps her homeland experiences of racism enabled her to be more tolerant.Â
If she held negative impressions none of them are included in the poems we study. What does this tell us about her as a poet? What purpose did she want her poems to serve?
