Features of Federation Houses

Casement Windows

Casement windows are used for style and decoration. Most Federation bungalow houses have casement windows because they are windows made from glass and can come in all different types of lines and patterns. Casement windows are very fragile and delicate because they are made from glass and wood. Casement windows are made of two, three, four or even five windows lined up together for decoration. There are lines on the casement windows because back then it was a common style.

Ornamental Woodwork

On Clooneen you can see dark green vertical lines on the gable. If you look closely at the roof you can see the flower cut out and on the windows you can see the fine wood lines. All these are Ornamental Woodwork decorations.

Fireplace

Decorative fireplaces are commonly found in Federation bungalows. As you know back in the early 1900’s houses didn’t have heaters so they put a fireplace in every room that requires warmth. Fireplaces in houses took a very decorative character in the federation bungalow. The largest of fireplaces would stretch across the whole wall showing all the decoration carvings and figures on the top of the fireplace. Over time fireplaces became the centrepiece of the house or in other terms the focal point in most rooms.

High Ceilings

High ceilings are an important part of a Federation house. They are used for letting the hot air travel up and let the cool air stay down and cool the people down. They were most popular in the 1900s. People also like houses with tall roofs because the light would spread all through the house. It is also grandeur that means it has a lot of space and when you walk in it gives you the feeling of elegance.
