“Yoga is a quest of wisdom, not religion or exercise”.

The idea of International Day of Yoga was first proposed by the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on 27 September 2014. Hon'ble Prime Minister stated that Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. In 2015 Reserve Bank of India issued a 10 rupees commemorative coin to mark the International Day of Yoga. On 21 June, 2015, 35985 people, including Narendra Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21 Asanas (yoga postures) for 35 minutes at Rajpath in New Delhi and celebrated the first International Day of Yoga. This celebration owns two Guinness World Records. The first record was for being the world's largest yoga class and the second one was for having maximum number of participating nationalities.

Yoga is India's gift to the world towards a better life. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India about 5,000-years ago. It is a powerful tool to deal with the stress of uncertainty and isolation, as well as to maintain physical well-being. Keeping in view, the social distancing measures adopted by countries to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, year 2020 theme of International yoga day is Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family. By changing our lifestyle in the prevailing crisis and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. The World Health Organization mentions yoga as a means to improve health in its Global action plan on physical activity 2018–2030: more active people for a healthier world. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, nature and the world.

Deshbandhu College invites you all to an online celebration of the 6th annual International Yoga Day from 1st June 2020 to 21st June 2020. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day which aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

I would like to quote a shloka from Srimadbhagwat Gita Chapter-6 on the definition of Yoga.

"तं विद्याद् दुःखसंयोगवियोगं योगसंज्ञितम् ।

स निश्चयेन योक्तव्यो योगोनिर्विण्णचेतसा "।।२३।।

Tam vidyaad duhkhasamyogaviyogam yogasamjnitam;

Sa nishchayen ayoktavyo yogo’nirvinnachetasaa.

Learn that dissociation from the association of affliction, which is called YOGA, and practice it with determined perseverance and undespairing steadiness. The Definition of YOGA - Dissociation from association of affliction.

In view of the definition of Yoga given by Lord Sri Krishna, we should try to make Yoga a way of our life as this is the only solution if we want to be completely free from the clutches of Sorrow, Misery, Depression, Frustration, Anger, Fear, Anxiety and the likes.

Best wishes to all the participants for a Happy and Healthy life.
