Represent numbers up to 1,200 using number lines, standard form, word form, and expanded form

Compose/decompose numbers up to 1,200 in more than one way using concrete/pictorial models

• Ask how many ones, tens, and hundreds are in numbers that you and your child come across
• Help practice writing numbers correctly by saying large numbers and having your child write them down. Students can create their own place value charts to help.

Compare/order whole numbers up to 1,200 using comparative language & symbols (>, <, or =)

• Provide opportunities for your child to compare numbers in real life situations. For example, you might say, “I have 106 pennies in my jar. You have 160 pennies in your piggy bank. Which of us has the greater amount? How do you know?”

Determine whether a number up to 40 is even or odd

• Encourage your child to find pairs of objects to determine if there is an odd or even number. For example, do all of the socks have a match? Does that mean there is an odd or even number?

Represent and solve addition/subtraction word problems within 20 where unknowns may be any of the terms

• Encourage your child to visualize story problems. Ask, “What can you draw to represent this story? What can you tell by looking at your drawing?” If needed, invite your child to act out the story by using simple objects such as action figures or pennies.
• Look for and share real-world situations as story problems. For instance, when shopping in the grocery store, you might say, “We are buying 12 apples. I see that 4 are green and the rest arered. How many red apples are we buying?”

• If your child would benefit from using concrete objects for support, provide pennies (or other counters) to help him break apart numbers into two parts. The use of fingers is also encouraged!
• Encourage your child to explain how she knows the correct answer. For example, “I know that 10 – 7 = 3, so that means 10 – 3 = 7. Three and seven are parts and 10 is the total.”
