AdvisorThe National Honor Society is a nationwide organization for high school students in the United States and outlying territories. The first chapter was established in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1921 by Dr. Edward Rynearson. The Dayton High School Chapter of the NHS was chartered in 1963 by Ms. Katye Griffits, a mathematics teacher who served as advisor until her retirement in 1976.
The National Honor Society elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, US Territories, Canada, and around the world. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) officially established NHS in 1921. Though many local and regional honor societies existed prior to 1921, no nationwide organization had been founded. Under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, the organization grew from the original Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue School to more than 1,000 chapters by 1930. Equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators, the new NHS organization quickly developed into one of the country’s leading educational groups. NHS will celebrate its centennial anniversary on March 1, 2021.
Scholarship: All Juniors and Seniors who maintain a GPA of 4.25 or better will receive an invitation to seek membership in the NHS at the beginning of the school year.
Students should then review the "Requirements for Membership" which is located below.
If interested, students should complete the "Student Information Form" (located below) and return the form electronically to Dr. Wright. All sections must be complete.
The information forms are screened, and presented to the Dayton High School NHS Faculty Advisory Board. That committee will approve of the student's qualifications for membership.
If qualified, students will receive an invitation to joint the NHS, and asked to complete the "Constitution/By-Laws Acknowledgement Form & Permission Slip" which can be found below.
Once the Constitution/By-Laws Acknowledgement Form & Permission Slip are received by Dr. Wright, the students will be inducted into the NHS at a virtual ceremony, and a certificate will be given to face-to-face students or sent to virtual students.
DUES: We do not charge dues as the organization pays all member registration fees to NASSP.
