To create my lamp I first laser cut 20 model triangles. They did not have the pattern that the final lamp would have but were so I could design the clip.
To design the clip I used Fusion 360. I made a new sketch and made a rough drawing of what the clip would look like. I took some measurements on the model to figure out the exact dimensions for the clip. I printed a model for the clip that only had one clip and not the angle so I could test it. I made multiple adjustments and printed multiple more models. When I had a good model I went back into Fusion and made the angle of the clip by creating a new plain and extruding it. I printed multiple tests until I got one that worked.
Below are the dimensions I used for the clip.
I then created the design I wanted for the lamp in Adobe Illustrator. I used guides to figure out where the line would go and created the shape. I then expanded the lines so they were shapes and I could shape build them into one piece. Then I changed the stroke to 0.001 inches and laser cut them.
Lastly, I put all the triangles together, leaving a few separate so I could open it, to create the final piece.
Reflection questions:
What went well?
After way too many test clips, when I finally got the final piece it worked very well and was very accurate.
What could be improved?
The lines on the design could be thicker so they're less delicate, the clips could be easier to clip together, and the holes for the clips could be more accurately placed and sized.
What would you do differently if you were to do this project again?
I would probably make all the triangles bigger so it was less delicate. I would change the thickness of the lines, make the clips easier to clip, not as tight, and the top of the clip angled. I would also print the clips in a better way so they didn't break as easily.
