To begin this project, I used a template of the picture frame and uploaded it to Fusion. I then had to measure a piece of plywood and customize the dimensions of the template. Next, I had to update the toolpaths for my frame. I then had to simulate the process that the CNC machine would implement.
I then had to find the 0-0-0 point in order to understand where to line the machine up with the wood. During my second frame I messed this up and had to change the 0-0-0 point in the Fusion app rather than redo my CNC line up.
We had to go into the actions section under manufacture and then click on the post process section. We could not change the Name/number but we could change the file name so that we could easily find it.
After sending G-Code to the CNC I had to tape and glue my wood piece down and line up the X,Y, and Z points with my 0-0-0 point. After doing this I had to check all 3 points and make sure the vacuum machine was on. After checking my 5 steps, I ran the machine
After taking my peice off the machine, I had to pick a color to spray paint it. I learned a good spray painting technique where you move back and forth on the wood.
I had to import my Fusion design into Adobe Illustrator and then change the dimensions so that it would fit into my frame. I then had to change the color so that the laser cutter could read what to cut. After this I followed a set of instructions to send it to the laser cutter and make sure all the information was correct. I had to center the piece on the laser cutter and then make sure the fans were on, and I was ready to cut.
I will create this photo with the dimensions of my frame on illustrator and then I email it to the maker space so that the Roland Printer can print it to scale and cut it out for me.
I assembled my frame with the acrylic first, then the photo, then the laser cut wood. Now I have an amazing picture of me and my mommy!
In your own words describe the major steps to successfully go from a 3D Model to a CNC cut part.
To sucessfully go from a 3D Model to a CNC cut part you have to generate toolpaths, simulate, post process, set up the CNC , and then run it.
What part of CAD/CAM did you find most complicated or confusing?
I found the design very tricky because I had missed a few days of class. I didn't grasp the concept of changing the dimensions and then changing them 1/2 in smaller. I also messed up my 0-0-0 point and thought it was very confusing to fix.
What lessons did you learn along the way?
I learned how to use a CNC machine and laser cutter which I have never used but always have wanted too. I also learned patience with Mr. Supiro and myself since so many students have questions.
What tools/software did you learn to use in order to create the artwork for your frames?
I learned how to use illustrator and how to create cut lines that the printer could read.
Why did you choose the artwork that you did?
I chose the art work that I chose because I love my mom so much and we dont have many photos together. In my second frame I did a mirror because I thought it would look cool.
