In Statistics, students have just finished their first project and have taken their first test. To finish this semester off, students will be studying for their final. If students pass their final, they will finish off the semester with a semester reflection. If students do not pass their final, students will be required to present a POL.
In Calculus, we continue reviewing the properties of functions, particularly those aspects of functions that have special importance to calculus, such as continuity, asymptotes, and end behavior. There will be a quiz soon.
So far this year, we have been brainstorming about what we want to do after high school. We are starting a research project where students are tasked with researching potential careers, including requirements, financial aspects, and more. We will soon move into financial aid and the FAFSA process.
Now that we have finished Crime and Punishment, we are focusing on the POL which involves writing a two page epilogue for the text. Students will also have to create a three scene sketch of the epilogue. Lastly, they have to explain shortly why they wrote their epilogue the way they did.
Students will culminate the fall semester with a high stakes project to Final POL. Student groups have chosen recent Supreme Court cases that they will research and develop arguments on both sides of the constitutional question. They will present oral arguments before the "US Supreme Court." Some students will act as attorneys and some will act as Supreme Court justices.
Students reflect on their lamp design project and their developed knowledge of "intentional design." They create their POL presentations around these reflections and practice their public speaking skills.
Students are prepping for their POL's. Their POL's will consist of the following: Students are the designer who need to pitch their logo/ mascot design for one of the following events: San Diego Comic Con, Olympics (choose Summer or Winter, choose a city that has yet to be a host, preferably a large city), Art Basel, or Coachella. They will create 3 different preliminary rough draft designs (either a mascot or a logo) for 1 of the 4 events. They will refine one of the designs by making visible improvements to 1 of the 3 designs and take it to 1 final rough draft. They will orally present their 3 designs, their design process, and their reasoning behind what they came up with for their final rough draft with a Google Slide Presentation. Students will be expected do their research! The best designs have meaning, history, and originality incorporated into them.
Students will complete their POL final Mural. They will showcase their finished oppression mural to the class and explain why they picked that topic.
Students are working on their POL's in which they will defend their performance in class this past semester with specific examples of how they have performed in each ESK and their habits of mind. This is an exercise in utilizing their entrepreneurial mindset and sales skills to focus on growth for next semester and how they can be honest while trying to be persuasive.
Post POL's students will be working on an "ornament" drop competition.
