Day 1:

Survival

Name Tags:

You will learn to make your very own custom name tag using online software on the lab machines with Mr. May. You put your name and picture on a name tag that you get to wear for the rest of this week in Minecraft Camp. Once camp is done, you'll get to take your name tag home to keep!

Master Guide to Minecraft in Survival:

  • Basics:

    • Collect wood from the nearest trees to craft your tools!

    • Get some food to keep your hunger bar full!

    • Build a shelter to survive the night and the creatures, or mobs, that come with it. Any shelter will do, even if it ends up being a dirt hut!

    • Collect wool from sheep to make a bed. Beds are essential for your first night, or else you'll be facing zombies, skeletons, and even creepers!

    • Use your wooden pickaxe to mine some nearby stone to make a stone pickaxe and a furnace, two key items for starting a new world.

  • Settling:

    • After this, there are usually 4 main things to accomplish before you have a fully established "base":

      • Expanding the shelter:

      • Create more space for storage and living space in general

      • Add a little decoration

      • Sustainable food source:

      • Establishing a sustainable food source is helpful because it gives you a constant supply of food so that you don't have to worry about hunger any more.

      • Farming crops is pretty easy to start with since you can destroy grass to get seeds that can be planted into wheat. The wheat can then be crafted into bread to restore 2 ½ hunger. If you get lucky and find a village along the way, you can find plenty of carrots, potatoes, or beets that can help you get a quick start on a crop farm.

      • An alternative is breeding animals for their meat. You can breed cows with wheat, sheep with wheat, pigs with crops, and chickens with seeds.

      • Mining:

      • Using your previously crafted stone tools, you can approach mining for things like coal, iron, gold, diamonds and more in one of two ways: exploring caves or a strategy called strip-mining.

      • Exploring caves opens up more opportunities to find goodies, but it comes with a cost. When exploring a cave, you'll have to bring lots of torches and defeat lots of mobs. If you choose to go caving, make sure to bring a shield to avoid creeper explosions.

      • Strip-mining is another way to mine where you mine a long tunnel in one direction. A super important part of strip-mining is where you choose to make your tunnel. There are certain coordinate levels in Minecraft that are best for each type of ore. The coordinate value you want to pay attention to is the middle one, the y-value. This value measures how high or low you are in a world.

      • Coal: Look around the tops/sides of mountains at Y-level 95-96 or tunnel into the mountain.

      • Copper: Tunnel at Y-level 47-48

      • Iron: Find a really tall mountain and look around at Y-level 232 or tunnel into the mountain.

      • Lapis Lazuli: Tunnel at Y-level 0

      • Redstone: Tunnel at Y-level -59

      • Gold: Tunnel at Y-level -16.

      • Diamonds: Tunnel super deep at Y-level -59!

      • When you go strip-mining, always make sure to bring plenty of pickaxes and torches, they'll run out quickly! Also, whether you like caving or strip-mining most players will choose to do both. Don't feel like you have to choose.

      • Villages:

      • Villages are helpful for getting a bed, food, and treasures. You can find these things by looking in their houses for chests. They can contain saddles, armor, tools, even diamonds!

      • If you get your hands on some emeralds, you can even trade with them for helpful items!

    • Projects:

    • After getting settled, you should have at least some iron, maybe a little gold, and hopefully some diamonds. Once you have these resources, you can craft some armor and better tools. If you have enough diamonds, you should definitely craft a diamond pickaxe as soon as you can.

    • At this point, you can do several things. You can...

      • Explore your world

      • Make a nether portal and explore the nether

      • Get more diamonds!

      • Enchant all of your tools and armor and make them netherite!

      • Find the stronghold and beat the game!

      • Expand your base

      • Build cool statues, cities, structures, etc.

      • Play around with Redstone

      • Complete achievements

      • Do whatever you want, use your imagination!
