May 3rd - 17th
Families,
Please make every effort to make sure your child is here these first 2 weeks of May on time, as we enter our state testing season. Please avoid any appointments during the school day, as well.
Your child has worked to learn so many new things this year and it is now time for them to show what they know!
Please help us by reinforcing the Good Effort criteria, so that all of our students will shine like the Hollywood STARs, during state testing. Encourage your child to do his or her BEST on the TEST!
Thank You,
Mrs. Brackin

Things ALL Families Need to Know
Did you know that Highland has its own daily school news channel? Tune in here to watch what is happening each morning live at 7:40am in the Hornet Studio!
School Breakfast
K-5th grade students that arrive at school from 7:00am - 7:30am will go straight to the cafeteria to choose if he or she would like to eat breakfast.
Pre-K students will eat breakfast with their class at the start of school.
Breakfast remains FREE through the end of the year for ALL students!
After 7:30am, students may go to the cafeteria for a GRAB & GO breakfast, which would be something like cereal and milk.
After breakfast, ALL K-5 students head to the gym until 7:30am, when students are dismissed to go to class.
We will be teaching students the new routine this week, Wednesday - Friday with a quick breakfast, then go full force next week!!!
Morning Car Duty Process
7:00 - 7:15 (or until you see an adult out front waving you to the front) - All Early Bird K-5 Drop-offs go to the BACK.
7:15 - ALL families with a PRESCHOOL student ALWAYS go to the BACK.
7:15 (or until you see an adult out front waving you to the front) - 7:40 - All K-5 families go to the FRONT.
Students should be ready to exit the car on their own.
Any families needing extra assistance (K-5) should pull all the way up to the Hornet sign (by the playground)
Once adults walk in the building, you're child is TARDY and you will need to walk them in to the front office.
Please NEVER drop a student off in the BACK or FRONT when an adult is not present.
ClaSSDojo
Families,
Are you connected to ClassDojo? This is Highland's primary communication tool. If you have not downloaded this app, please do so. You should have received an invited from your child's teacher to get the most up-to-date classroom news, as well as any school-wide announcements on the School Story!
Please use Dojo communication only for school purposes and not personal business. Also, please respect our teachers by abiding by the 7am-7pm Monday - Friday Dojo time and not on the weekends. Our teachers work VERY HARD and deserve to have time with their families and to take a mental break!!!
2022-23 Highland Student/Family Handbook
Please click here to review the student handbook and find out everything you want to know about Highland!
PikmyKid
Families,
Please make sure you check your PikMyKid app for your child's transportation mode on Monday. If your child rode Bus #25 Purple last year in the afternoon, please note that this bus only runs in the morning and your child would have a different bus in the afternoon. That change should be reflected in your PikMyKid app. Remember, if you want to make any changes in your child's daily pickup, you must do that before 2:00pm or else you must call the school office. Make sure when you arrive in the afternoon car rider line that you announce your arrival in PikMyKid.. You are in the car pickup line starting at 2:00pm.

TUESDAY IS ALL OUT BLUE DAY to CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL ANGELMAN'S DAY!
Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 21st, we are going ALL OUT BLUE, to celebrate International Angelman’s Day, in honor of our student Harper Webb, who was born with Angelman’s Syndrome. We want to educate and raise awareness for Angelman’s, which occurs in 1 out of 15,000 births and with 500,000 diagnosed cases of Angelman Syndrome Worldwide. With Angelman’s Syndrome verbal communication is limited and communication devices along with nonverbal communication are used to support communication.
Harper, a 4th grader here at Highland with Angelman Syndrome, has been a part of our family since preschool and is loved by all our staff and students. She is always a smiling face that lights up a room and loves being with her classmates. Although Harper cannot speak she has many ways she communicates to her friends through her AAC device and nonverbal communication. “Harper hugs” are a favorite here at Highland and is one of the ways she show her love for others. Harper teaches us all so much everyday!! She is a true superhero in our school!!
Kindness Branches Out
This month, our students will be watching for random acts of Kindness from others. As they observe this, they can fill out a heart about the person and kindness witnessed and put it on our Kindness Tree!
I am inviting any family members to participate in this, as well! If you notice any ACTS of KINDNESS from Highland staff of students, please feel free to create your own heart and write the names of the person and the act of kindness on the heart. You can send those in with your child to give to our office to be shared!!!
THANK YOU FAMILIES for your KIND HEARTS in supporting Highland!!!

Please keep the DCPS@HOME black folder in your child's backpack at all times when not working on items, as this will be where we put more packets, if necessary. This will also be where teachers check for packets that have been completed.
Please remember that your child has 5 days after returning from a DCPS@HOME day to return their completed packet to their teacher. This will mark their attendance for that day. If work is not completed, this will be an unexcused absence.

We hope everyone had a great 4th of July and is having a FANTASTIC summer break! Although, there is still time for your kids to kick their feet up and enjoy another month of summer, we wanted you to have some important upcoming dates to mark on your calendars.
Take care Hornet families and we will see you all in August!!!

See important dates below just for you!
If you have a student entering kindergarten, please bring them anytime between 10-12pm OR 4-6pm to be screened. This process allows our Kindergarten teachers to learn important information needed to help your child get off to a great start on his or her learning journey!
Parents please bring any required documents for your child to start school at this time, if you haven't done so already: school physicals, immunization certificates, social security card, birth certificate, proof of residence (copy of utility bill), eye and dental exams.
Monday, Aug. 2
8am -10am - All students with last names A-M
Wednesday, Aug. 3rd
8am - 10am - All students with last names N-Z
During this time, students will meet their teacher and go to the classroom to learn about school and participate in "Get to Know You" activities from 8am - 9:30am, while parents learn about Highland with the school leadership team. Then, from 9:30am - 10am students will go on a short school bus rider, while parents go to the classrooms and learn about kindergarten with the teachers.
Please join us in the cafeteria. PTO will be providing coffee and donuts.
We can't wait to see all of our Highland Hornets soon, but until then, ENJOY the rest of your summer!!!
