SEL TOOL of the Month: LEADER BRAIN "FLIP YOUR LID" for October

Highland Families,

This month at school, the SEL Tool: Leader Brain was introduced to students in all grades K-5. Students are not only learning how to identify their feelings by using the Mood Meter (Septembers Tool), but are learning how to identify when their bodies start becoming dysregulated (out of ones control).  The tool: Leader Brain gives students of visual of what an in control brain looks like. (I can think clearly, I can solve problems, I can make good choices..) and what a Flipped Lid look like. (I am not ready to talk, I am not thinking clearly, I am in fight, flight, or freeze) Being able to identify where your brain is at will help students identify when they need a break or need to calm down their bodies before they can feel in control again. Teaching "Flipping my Lid" creates calmer, more understanding, and empathetic learning environments where students feel a sense of safety.

Social-Emotional Learning

Guidance (SEL) for the Month of October we focused on Self-Management, as well as, Relationship Skills

Below are some topics we have covered or will be covering in the month of October.

SEL TOOL: MOOD METER for September

Highland Families,

This week at school, the SEL Tool: Mood Meter was introduced to students in all grades K-5. Students are not only learning how to identify their feelings by using the Mood Meter, but are learning to shift from vague responses such as, "I'm good." to more direct responses such as, "I'm excited, or I'm worried".  Next week we will be sending families magnetized Mood Meters to hang on your refrigerators in hopes that a common language between home and school will help students discuss their emotions with the caring adults in their lives.

Please watch this 1:00 minutes video of students here at Highland Elementary School talk about the Mood Meter!

SEL TOOL of the Month for Families

Families,

Each month we will discuss and send home a NEW tool for students to use that will help develop their Social-Emotional Skills.  The same tool students learn at school will also be sent home for families to be able to use at home too.  Every month I will post a video on here of the tool and how it works.  We will also explain how to use the tool at home, and how it is being used at school as a part of our SEL.

Our tool this month is called a Mood-Meter.  A mood meter is a great tool for students to use when they need help identifying how they feel.  Be on the look for our next week's post about the Mood-Meter and how it works here at school, and how you can use it at home!

Social-Emotional Learning

Guidance (SEL) Curriculum will start in the month of September.  In our first month we will be discussing the following topics

Things ALL Families Need to Know

Did you know that Highland has its own daily school news channel? Tune in here to watch what is happening each morning live at 7:40am in the Hornet Studio!

Parents,

When the cafeteria serves a FREE lunch, the student receives everything that comes with the lunch. The cafeteria cannot serve that any other way under the grant. So, please help your child understand that if he or she brings lunch and should ask for just a piece of pizza, just a bag of chips or just a milk, they will be charged for individual items. They must take the whole lunch, but do not have to eat it all.

Thanks!!!

PikmyKid

Families,

Please make sure you check your PikMyKid app for your child's transportation mode on Monday. If your child rode Bus #25 Purple last year in the afternoon, please note that this bus only runs in the morning and your child would have a different bus in the afternoon. That change should be reflected in your PikMyKid app. Remember, if you want to make any changes in your child's daily pickup, you must do that before 2:00pm or else you must call the school office. Make sure when you arrive in the afternoon car rider line that you announce your arrival in PikMyKid.. You are in the car pickup line starting at 2:00pm.

Student Chromebooks

Families,

All of our students have one to one Chromebooks. It is at the teacher's discretion when to send the Chromebooks home with students. Usually for our smaller folks, they are used mostly in the classroom or on DCPS@Home Days. We all know sometimes things happen. Please review the replacement costs below and help your child setup great routines to avoid accidents or losses.
