SDMHS Annual Public Meeting Title I 2023

South Davidson Annual Public Meeting 2023

Parent & Family Engagement Nights

On May 13, 2023, we kicked off our 1 School, 1 Book Summer Reading event.  We are very excited to be reading Counting by 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan. We invited our upcoming sixth graders and their families to the event. The rising sixth grades had a great turnout.  During the event, we previewed the book, played trivia (that's something the main character loves to do), designed bookmarks, and learned how to create fun images with the use of Generative AI.  Another special part of the PFE was the middle school art show which showcased our students' best pieces. A special thanks is given to Mrs. Howell and Mrs. Wyatt for all their hard work to make this event a success!

On December 5, 2023, SDMHS partnered with the State Employee Credit Union to participate in The Reality of Money Simulation. High school students in various CTE classes, Economics and Personal Finance, and Math 4 had the opportunity to see what it was like to plan and live on a budget. It was awesome to watch our students use critical thinking to make decisions that they will be making in the future  One student said, "The Reality of Money shows us different things we have to buy as adults, which prepares us for the future. I learned my credit score and salary can be a benefit or barrier in life. The presentation not only taught me the importance of managing a budget but also creating a structured budgeting system".

On October 23, 2023, Mrs. Holt, our Career Development Coordinator, shared with families Portrait of a Graduate and how it specifically relates to our students. Mrs. Holt shared the vision for our students and how it has changed since their parents were in school. She shared the many opportunities students have to not only learn at South Davidson but also at Davidson and Davie Community College and onsight with local businesses.

Learning on Location:

Field Trip to the Greensboro Science Center and Skywild

On May 1, 2024, our 8th-grade students went flying through the air as they ziplined across the Greensboro Science Center.  It was a trip they will be talking about for a long time!  We even had some teachers zip across the skies. Students got to put their science knowledge into action as they learned how organisms interact with and respond to the biotic and abiotic components of their environment. The Greensboro Science Center is the perfect place to see both science and math in action. I wonder if they calculated their speed before they zipped down?

Field Trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway

On March 18, 2024, the 7th graders went to Charlotte Motor Speedway to learn about the math and science behind NASCAR and drag racing. The students rotated through 2 interactive STEAM stations focusing on force and motion, traction and friction, and speed and acceleration. Students will participate in the NASCAR experience where they take a van ride around the 24-degree inclined track and get to spin out in the winner's circle.

Field Trip to Lazy 5 Ranch

On Friday, March 22, 2023, our 6th-grade students will be taking their spring field trip to Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville.  Lazy 5 Ranch is a privately owned animal sanctuary that educates students in an entertaining way, as well as provides an excellent environment for several endangered species including the Grevy Zebra, Scimitar Horned Oryx, and Ring-tailed Lemur. While at the ranch students will Students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand how animals and plants coexist harmoniously through a shared ecosystem. They will also learn how populations of animals respond to biotic and abiotic factors in their environment.

Field Trip to Kersey Valley

On October 11, 2023, our 6th grade students went to Kersey Valley where they used their problem-solving skills while navigating a corn maze, their science knowledge to identify and dig for fossils and gems, and their math skills as they tested their height in the pillow jump. It was awesome to see our students having fun being able to apply the concepts they learn in class.
