Student AI Access and Safeguarding Student Data

Why the Consent Form is Combined Our district utilizes Google Workspace for Education as the foundational account structure for student learning, file storage, and Chromebook access. Under current district policy, the consent form is designed as a unified approval because modern educational platforms continuously integrate minor AI-assisted features directly into core tools. Because student accounts are managed at the system level, we do not currently have a mechanism to split the agreement or toggle off individual feature capabilities on a student-by-student basis within the same Google account ecosystem.

Protecting Elementary Students & Age Restrictions We want to put your mind at ease regarding our AI policy’s age guidelines:

• No Access to 13+ Standalone Apps: Elementary students will not be given access to standalone, commercial generative AI tools that carry a 13+ age requirement (such as standard public chatbots or large language models like ChatGPT/Gemini).

• Strict Vetting & Vendor Contracts: Under our guidelines and COPPA regulations, students under 13 are only permitted to use applications that the district has thoroughly vetted and approved. This requires a formal Student Data Privacy Agreement (SDPA) with the vendor, giving the district the legal right to manage consent and enforce strict privacy protections.

• Built-In Guardrails for Classroom Apps: Lower elementary students do use district-approved creative platforms like Canva for Education or Adobe Express. While these tools have embedded generative AI elements (such as quick image generation or design suggestions), they operate under strict enterprise guardrails. They filter inappropriate content, prohibit the collection or sharing of Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and do not use student data to train public AI models.

Our goal is to foster digital literacy safely, ensuring students benefit from modern learning tools while keeping their personal data strictly protected.
