Research vendors before completing a purchase at a new-to-you online shop and visit official websites directly rather than clicking links from ads.
Avoid storing card information on shopping websites whenever you can.
Stay alert for phishing, smishing (text message), and vishing (phone call) attempts seeking payment for fines or fees you don't owe. Don’t engage with links to payment sites you receive through text messages, unless you are expecting the text from a trusted source.
Using Cards Online
If you have a card that offers it, use a virtual card number for online shopping.
Credit cards provide stronger protection for fraud victims than debit cards.
Verify that a site has security certificates before entering payment info. Look for the lock icon in your browser bar. Scammers will sometimes use secure websites, so this does not always mean it's a legitimate site, but it’s a good thing to check for.
When you are on public WiFi, like at a coffee shop, airport or a hotel, avoid shopping online or accessing financial services. If you do, use a VPN service on your computer or mobile device before entering any passwords or credit card numbers.
Banking & Credit Reports
You may want to consider freezing your credit bureau reports and “thawing” them only when needed. This processes prevents new accounts from being opened in your name. It’s a free service that can be done online with each of the three major bureaus. When you need to apply for new credit, you can temporarily lift the freeze.
Protecting Your Financial Accounts
Enable two-factor authentication on all of your financial accounts. The extra step of entering a code or clicking on an app on your phone can be annoying, but this quick step is worth it in the security you gain.
Never respond to unsolicited calls, emails, or texts requesting financial information. Contact your credit card provider or bank using the number printed on the back of your card.
Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized charges.
