National History Day
Students are working on National History Day Projects for the competitions at their grade levels. Students in grades 1-5 will be making posters for the competition. Students in grades 6-8 have the option to create a poster, website, or performance. Projects are completed by mid-January at the 6-8 level (with on-going improvements as they advance), and by the end of March for grades K-5.
Students in grades 1-3 will compete at the classroom level only.
The top 2 competetors at the district level in grades 4 and 5 will move on to the state competitions. Winners will be notified in October. Students competing will leave their completed poster projects with their teacher to be displayed at the Montana History Day competition, which takes place in September each year. Projects will be returned to them after the competition is completed.
The top 2 competetors in grade 6-8 at the district level will move to Regionals, State, and then Nationals,respectively. Students will travel to each of the competions they move on to. The National competition takes place in or near Washington, D.C. each summer. Students traveling to these destinations may have the opportunity to visit some historical sites near the competition site. The first contest is usually in February. If students place at one level, they have a chance to improve thier projects before competing at the next level. This makes it an on-going project until the final competition is completed and winners are announced.
