In addition to Sunny by Jason Reynolds, students need to read Barracoon by Zora Neale Hurston. Summer reading assignments for Barracoon are due the first day of school. Turn in your assignment to Ms. Kari Wilcox.
SUMMER READING GUIDE IB ENGLISH HL TWO
TEXT: BARRACOON by ZORA NEALE HURSTON
PART 1: Barracoon Annotations
Get your own copy (new or used) of Barracoon. Make meaningful annotations as you read. You are responsible for reading and annotating all sections, except the Afterword by Deborah G. Plant. This means you should read and annotate all of the following:
· the foreword by Alice Walker
· the introduction and the editor’s note by Deborah G. Plant
· the preface
· the introduction
· Chapters 1-12 (the main body of the text)
· the appendix— all by Hurston.
I will collect your annotated book on the first day of school.
For advice on annotations, watch these two YouTube videos:
· “How to Annotate” (by Studyign–not a misspelling)—a student’s perspective (about four minutes)
· “How to Annotate a Text” (by Heather Butz)—a teacher’s perspective (about three minutes)
· Also, peruse the next page of this document, for it is a sample of one of my annotated pages.
PART 2: TEST ON BARRACOON
You will also have a test on Barracoon which involves both a multiple-choice section and an extended response section during the first week of school. For questions, contact Ms. Wilcox at Kari.Wilcox@darlington.k12.sc.us.
