My name is Michelle Greene, and this semester I am teaching Precalculus Honors and Precalculus CP. I am the statistician for the varsity football and varsity baseball teams. I also sponsor the Lamar High School Student Council. I have taught for 33 years, and this is my 30th year at Lamar High School. This my 25th year of teaching at Francis Marion University. This is my 2nd year of teaching at Florence-Darlington Technical College. Having taught many years in Lamar, I have the opportunity to teach the children of many former students. I know what a great school we have, and I look forward to another wonderful year.
Math runs in my family. My dad is a retired electrical engineer who lives in Virginia and is a huge Virginia Tech Hokies fan. My sister is also a math teacher and teaches 8th grade at Hartsville Middle School. We have three fur babies: Louie, Maggie, and Dixie. They keep us very busy. In my very small amount of spare time, I love to bake (my sister is the cook)! I love to crochet and make amigurumi. I am a Disney fanatic and love to go to Disney World any time I get the chance! My grandfather was a 1935 graduate of the University of Georgia, and I graduated from there in 1996. I spend weekends during football season following the Bulldogs! I got bored during the pandemic, so I went back to school. I finished my associates degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Florence-Darlington Tech in May 2023. I had a ball! Just keeping up with the times!
I am a math nerd and love teaching math, but I clearly understand many students enter my classroom thinking math is their worst subject. I know math can be challenging for many students. My dad always says that engineering is not about the math or science you learn, but it is about the critical thinking and problem solving skills you learn while taking those classes. My goal for every student who enters my class is to become a critical thinker and problem solver. Not every math concept will be learned with advanced mastery, but the ability to analyze and solve problems will carry students throughout their lives. So when students ask, "When am I ever going to use this?", my answer is, "We learn problem solving skills, and you will use those skills for the rest of your lives!"
