My Background

I grew up in Pompano Beach, Florida (just north of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale). I lived near the beach so surfing and skateboarding were a big part of my childhood. We moved to Hilton Head, where I attended Hilton Head High School. While I may have once been a Seahawk, I'm much happier being a Falcon! I attended Wake Forest University (GO DEACS!) where I earned a BA in psychology and a BA in social studies education. I also was lucky enough to meet my wife, Farrah, at WFU. After college we got married and I followed her to Knoxville, Tennessee. My wife attended University of Tennessee (GO VOLS!!!) for her PhD in clinical psychology. While there, I taught at Karns High School for 5 years. Afterwards, she had to do a one year internship to complete her degree. For that she was accepted to Brown University up in Providence, Rhode Island. So we spent a year up there. While there I earned my masters in social studies education from the University of Rhode Island (GO RAMS!). We ended up in Florence, SC in 2005 when she got a job at Francis Marion (GO PATRIOTS!) as a professor of psychology. Since we moved here I have been teaching at DHS. I've taught everything from Geography to Journalism. My wife and I live over in Florence with our two kids, Rylie (12) and Liam (8), and our Goldendoodle named Sandy. My mom lives with us too which is awesome because our kids get to hang out with their grandma a lot.

Our Summer Trips

Our family loves camping, or as we call it, "glamping" because let's face it, taking a house on wheels is not exactly "roughing it." This summer saw us travel as far south as Key West where we did everything from tour Earnest Hemingway's home to snorkel on Looe Key Reef with sharks. On the way home we stopped over at Cape Canaveral and went to visit the Kennedy Space Center to see the all sorts of cool things including the Space Shuttle Atlantis. I also made it to Philadelphia for a educational technology conference where I presented on podcasting in the classroom. While there, of course I took in the sights: Founders Hall, Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin's grave, etc. And obviously I ate a philly cheesesteak sandwich every chance I got! We also had some trips to the beach with our kids. And every summer I pick one big concert to attend, so this summer I went to see Iron Maiden in Charlotte.

Fun Facts!

  • I have been to all 50 states
  • I have traveled outside the US to Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, China, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Belarus.
  • My life's path has enabled me to meet some famous people too: President Bill Clinton, Alan Jackson (country singer), Melissa Etheridge (rock singer), Sam Snead (golfer from WAY back in the day), Emeril Lagasse (chef), and Reba McEntire (country singer).
