The Center for Gifted Education’s Language Arts units (College of William & Mary) aim to build literary analysis, persuasive writing, language skills, and oral communication while strengthening reasoning and understanding of change. They use challenging, diverse texts to prompt written and oral reflection, foster interdisciplinary connections, and support student-centered research. A user’s guide is also available.
Project M3: Mentoring Mathematical Minds is a curriculum series for mathematically talented elementary students (grades 3–6). Recognized nationally in gifted math education and now available in Flourish, it supports the Common Core and NAGC exemplary practices. The program includes a teacher eBook with pacing, rubrics, and differentiation, and centers on real-world problem explorations that let students solve problems like practicing mathematicians.
Through a partnership with the SC Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (SCGSSM), our ALERT GT students are able to participate in STEM Days at GSSM!
A STEM Day at GSSM offers hands-on STEM learning experiences for third through tenth grade students on GSSM’s campus. During their visit, students in grades 3 through 10 will explore and participate in two classes filled with inquiry-driven activities and projects related to STEAM topics, including engineering, chemistry, physics, and more. GSSM will provide lunch for all students in the GSSM Dining Hall. Current GSSM Student Ambassadors will lead visiting school groups in a tour of the campus.
Beyond its reputation as a mentally stimulating activity, chess nurtures essential skills and values that can shape a child’s character and cognitive abilities. Chess is a game that revolves around strategy. By playing chess, students can develop critical thinking skills, learn to analyze positions, plan moves, and outmaneuver opponents. These strategic teachings extend beyond the chessboard, enabling students to approach challenges with a more thoughtful and calculated mindset. Learning to play the game of Chess enhances students':
Critical Thinking
Collaborative Learning and Problem-Solving
Time Management
Forecasting and Planning
Decision-Making in a Real-World Environment
