FMP Start: Set Up.
Today I started off my Final Major Project by creating my weekly schedule, creating the bare bones for my google site (which can be filled in throughout the duration of the FMP), preparing my asset list and art bible for later on in the project, as well as familiarising myself with my brief. I have listed what the aims of my project are, hardware, software, and skills I'll need.
I believe this was a brilliant start to the project, as I feel confident about my workload for the rest of the week! Furthermore, It has also given me an understanding of my expectations for myself throughout the project. I am really happy with the work I have completed today, and feel confident for the work I need to start and complete for the rest of this week.
Wednesday 31st January 2024
Research start - Flash Games and Character Creators.
Today I completed work on a questionnaire, which I plan to use as an element of my reserahc. This will be vital research, as it will give me a broad overview of opinions about dress up games and character creation from a variety of different ages. I've already had a great variety of answers from my research pool, so I look forward to talking about my findings later on in the week.
I also used my time today to start my research on different flash dress up games I played when I was younger, gathering reference images and talking about elements like the UI design, art style, choice of assets, and diversity within the games. I also chose to talk about who I felt the target audience for each game was, as I feel this will be important to think about during the development of my own title.
During my next day in college [Friday], I plan to hold a focus group on my findings from my questionnaire, before analysing all the feedback I've been given and applying it to my own project. I also plan to finish my asset list so that I have a concrete list of what needs to be created for the rest of the project. Friday will also be when I record my weekly development vlog - a rolling piece of work I plan to complete each week where I will talk about the work I have completed, what needs to be completed in the near future, and how I have found the process of creating my game so far. I look forward to completing these tasks later this week!

Technical Difficulties and a Deeper Dive Into the Project.
Today I had a packed schedule, which I started off by recording both my focus group based off my questionnaire, as well as my personal development vlog. I spent my first full session on this task [an hour and a half], however when I went to check the footage the audio hadn't recorded. Whilst a tutor checked over the camera before giving it to me, it was still my responsibility to make sure the equipment was working correctly so I was gutted at this waste of my time. One saving grace of the whole situation was the support and guidance of my focus group panellists, who decided to give up their own working time to re-record the entire video. Now with a working camera, we managed to record the session in a faction of the time, whilst also getting all of the great detailed conversation and input from everyone, so I couldn't be happier! I spent my afternoon discussing the technical aspects of my game with my tutor, which gave me some ideas of what I need to research.
Whilst happy with the outcome, the problems from my morning did have some knock-on effects with my schedule - I haven't managed to analyse the replies from my questionnaire and focus group, finish my research on character creators and doll dress up games, or edited the videos recorded today. I plan to add this work to my schedule next week, so that I won't be behind for the rest of my project. The problems I faced taught me that I should always check that equipment is working myself, rather then relying solely on someone else.
Week 2: 05th February - 11th February 2024

Research Continiuation
After creating my schedule on Monday evening, I had my plans pushed back due to my tutor being observed. This took up most of the afternoon, and whilst I learned useful skills about portfolio building and creative thought processes I still managed to carry on with my reserach that I didn't manage to complete last week. I plan to finish this research by friday evening.
Wednesday 07th February 2024
Character Creator research and questionnaire analysing!
Today I had a really productive day! I started and completed my research on modern Character Creation tools, which was really beneficial as it helped me to identify features that I like and dislike, as well as features I would like to include within my own title.
As well as this, I also analysed feedback I had received on the questionnaire I created last week - It was really interesting to read everyone's responses and see what I agreed and disagreed with and I'm really happy with what I managed to learn! Over the weekend I managed to edit my focus group, so the next steps will be to analyse the answers my participants brought forward during this and how I could use some of them for my own game.
On Friday, I plan to record and edit my development vlog for the week, whilst also finishing my outstanding research from the past few weeks and maybe starting work on deciding what aesthetic I want my game to have.
Friday 2nd February 2024
Illness day - Dev Vlog and finishing up outstanding work.
On Thursday I became ill, and having not gotten better for my college day Friday I decided to work from home.
I started by recording my development vlog for the week, detailing what work I had completed and how I had found it useful, as well as things I had learned. Even though I'm only two weeks into this process, I've been really enjoying having a chance to reflect fully on my work for the week, and identify how it is feeding into the wider project. This process is also giving me a chance to improve my skills with video editing and camera work, as these are skills I want to build for my projects as a Twitch streamer away from college.
I also spent my afternoon finishing my research on Doll Dress-Up games, Which I found a lot of fun to complete as it gave me a chance to play these games again for nostalgia, whilst also looking at them with a more critical eye so I could find elements I liked and could translate into my own game.
Overall, I'm really happy with my progress this week! I really want to spend some time next week deciding what aesthetic I want this game to have, so that I can take the next steps into designing and concepting assets! I also need to start looking into how to create assets for my game, which is an aspect of my research I plan to jump into next week.
Week 3: 12th February - 18th February 2024
Tuesday 13th February 2024
Aesthetics for my Assets.
Today I wanted to have a go making a mock up of my game within Unreal, however due to software issues I couldn't do this. Instead of this, I decided to have a look at what aesthetic I may want my game to lean into, which will allow me to pinpoint my target audience later down the line.
Today I also started work thinking about what aesthetics I would want to draw inspiration from for my game - originally I wanted to just create a game which included simple assets, however I didn't know where to start with asset creation. Picking a fashion style and running with it for ideas seems like the best plan of action, as it means I will have pre-established elements that I need to follow to make sure that the game makes sense and stays true to the subject material. it also feels like the best way to create a character creator that feels more cohesive and planned, rather then a creator full of assets from a mismatch of different clothing styles.
I tried to look at aesthetics I've never drawn for before - I looked at aesthetics like Steampunk, Scene, Decora Kei and Techware. Whilst I don't know what I want to stick with, I really like the idea of the loud and fun assets I could create when leaning into Decora Kei! Making this mood board has made me realise though that I just want to create a general creator, with plenty of different assets that would work for a wide range of people who lean into different aesthetics.
Later this week, I plan to complete research on how to create the technical side of my project, which I couldn't complete today.
Wednesday 14th February 2024
Mechanics Research
Today I started research into how I could create my game from a technical standpoint.
When talking to my tutors within the past week, I decided that creating a basic menu system, which I could then edit and change as needed, would be a good base for my UI based game.
I also tried looking for information on widget switchers, as they will give me the functionality of a tabbed menu, which is how I want my game to work. However, I found information hard to come by or inconclusive, and have dropped this reserach for when I have more work completed.
Next week is half term, so I plan over the next couple of weeks to finish my simple menu, as well as carrying on with idea development for creative assets.
Week 4: 26th February - 3rd March 2024
Tuesday 27th February 2024
Mechanics creation - Simple menu system
Today I carried on research on how I could create my simple menu system - I have managed to find a series by YouTuber and programmer 'Ryan Laley' that goes step by step through how to create a menu system, as well as how to construct a tabbed system like the I couldn't find any information for. Now that I've found these tutorials, I feel that I am equipped enough to start work on the blueprinting for my project.
Before I start blueprinting however, I want to create an artbible for my game. I believe that now I have decided to focus on Decora Kei, I can now more solidly make decisions about the look of my game - from the artstyle to colour scheme and UI design. This is the work I plan to complete for the rest of the week.
Wednesday 28th February 2024
Art Bible research and Prep!
Today I started looking at elements I would need to research for my art bible, starting with art style - I knew from the start of this project that I wanted to learn how to create effective lineless artwork, so I have decided that doing an almost chibi-like artstyle, with elements like character proportion from Splatoon's Illustrative artsyle would have a really nice look! I also feel that this style would tie in really well with the Decora Kei influence for my assets.
Tomorrow I will complete the bulk of the art bible, which means that I will be able to start programming and completing final assets next week!
Friday 30th February 2024
Art Bible
Today, I managed to create the Art Bible for my game. This entailed making important decisions about my game, such as colour choices, art style, asset inspirations and UI designs. This also gave me a chance to research how to create a successful art bible, as I wanted to make sure the information included would be important if I was working in a team. I decided to split it into 3 main sections: Art Style, where I talked about linework, colour choices and what main style my game will have; Character art, where I took a deeper look into how I wanted the assets created for my character creation mechanic to look and what aesthetic the clothing items would take; and User Interface, where I took a pre-existing example and explained which elements I wanted to include within my own game and how I wanted them to look.
Overall, I feel that creating this art bible was a valid use of time - whilst I am slightly behind on the research and Unreal Blueprinting side of the project, I almost feel ready to start creating final polished assets for my game.
Looking at the work completed so far with what I had planned on my project proposal, I am feeling quite overwhelmed at the amount of programming that I need to get completed as Unreal is a weak spot of my knowledge of a game developer. I also feel that I have a lot of research that needs completing, such as how to create effective lineless artwork and anatomy for stylised realism. Whilst I am worried, my problems with motivation arising once again, I feel that once I get into a groove with the project I'll be able to complete the work on time.
Week 5: 4th March - 10th March 2024
Tuesday 5th March 2024
Blueprinting: Simple Menu System
Today I worked on programming my simple menu within Unreal Engine! I followed a tutorial by Gorka Games, which explained how to create a simple menu system for my opening menu and pause menu. I created these menu's using UI blueprints, however the tutorial showed how to open a 3d level, not another ui widget. I managed to work out how to make this work on my own, by using a 'remove all widgets' node to get rid of the menu screen, before using a 'create widget' node to add the main game widget. This widget is then added to the viewport with the 'add to viewport' node.
Overall I'm really happy that I've managed to create this! I had no idea where to start when I began my work today, but I managed to create a working system whilst also working some elements out on my own! Now I have the base set up, I next want to add a tabbed menu system to my main game widget, so that the assets can be seperated into different categories.
Wednesday 6th March 2024
Blueprinting: Tabbed Menu System
Today I managed to add a tabbed menu system to my main game window, following a UI concept I created.
I managed to create this tabbed menu by following a tutorial series by Ryan Laley, however I ignored the elements about making controller support as my game is not going to support this control type.
Overall, I found these tutorials easy to follow and successful for creating my menu system! I'm really happy that I've managed to create this element of my game, as I was quite scared I wouldn't be able to work it out! Now I just need to work out how to create a drag and drop system for my assets, and then the technical side of my game will be completed [bar adding backing music and sound effects, etc.]
Later this week I plan to take a break from coding to look further into Decora fashion, so that I have a deeper understanding of the fashion genre before creating assets.
Friday 8th March 2024
Taking a deep dive into Decora Fashion.
Today I spent my afternoon taking a deeper dive into Decora fashion - the clothing style I have decided to focus on for my game!
I watched a great documentary by Refinery 29, which goes into detail about what Decora fashion is, interviews celebrities and everyday people who dress in Decora Kei fashion, and explains the origins of the fashion. I really enjoyed watching this documentary as I feel that I have a greater understanding of how I could create assets that fit with this style, and what kinds of assets would work for this style.
I then created a moodboard including some of the interviewees from the documentary, as well as decora influencers I've seen on social media as a source of inspiration.
Week 6: 11th March - 17th March 2024
Tuesday 12th March 2024
Research - Drag and Drop System.
Today I took a day to research how I could create my drag and drop system. I started some work on creating this system, following a tutorial by Gorka Games, however I got rid of this system as it didn't work. I believe that this is due to the widget switcher mechanic that my tabbed menu used to change between windows - I plan to research further in the future as to if a drag and drop system would work, however if it will not I can use UI buttons which when pressed will make the clothing appear on the character.
Wednesday 13th March 2024
Blueprinting: Tabbed Menu System
Today I messed with UI for my game, creating a simple frame for my ui buttons to look aesthetically pleasing within before adding it to my game window. The UI didn't work however - I think I need to place the working parts on top of the transparent PNG so that they will still retain functionality. Furthermore, I also tried to change my homemade buttons to easier to drag around ui buttons within unreal, however this broke my entire project and I don't have time to fix it today - I will get it fixed on friday.
Friday 15th March 2024
Catching Up.
Today I managed to fix my UI buttons, changing them back to my homemade ones and fixing all the blueprinting related to them. After this was fixed, I pitched my project to my class, creating a powerpoint and standing infront of the class and presenting the information. Overall, I'm really happy with how this pitch went! I was able to speak eloquently, and even if I kept running out of breath and was speaking fast [I was the last pitch of the day and everyone wanted to go for lunch], I still believe that I was able to get the main elements of my game conveyed to a high standard.
Even though I planned to get some art assets started this week, my lack of work ethic and motivation has meant that I have pushed them off for another week. I do seriously plan to start next week, as I feel that if I start any later I won't be able to finish the project in time!
Week 7: 18th March - 24th March 2024
Tuesday 19th March 2024
Posing
Today I chose 4 poses used by decora models, and evaluated them to see which elements would be the best to use for my own game. I really liked the more basic stance, which would be easier to create assets for as I wouldn't need to worry too much about the fabric draping and anatomy. However, I want to challenge myself with this project so I've decided that I'd like to use a raised hand gesture to give the pose more visual interest.
Later on this week, I plan to finally start creating assets! I've been really struggling with my motivation and work ethic throughout this project - I entered the FMP in a state of artistic burnout, which I havent managed to break yet. I'm getting really nervous about completing all of my work on time, or at least complete the game to the standard that I was hoping to create. I have tried motivating myself, be that through my work picking a fashion genre to base the game upon, creating moodboards and looking at poses, but I'm still struggling to find the barb that will make me interested in drawing for the project.
Friday 22nd March 2024
Artwork Generation - Sketch
Today I started creating assets for the project! I have finally decided to power through the art process, and have started the body base and facial assets for my game. I plan to have 4 different skin tones, and 5 different types of all assets so that the game has a good base of assets that I can add to in the future.
I have also decided to do a mix of the basic stance from my pose studies, alongside a cheeky peace sign so that the character has some visual interest. I may change this pose, but right now this is the pose I have gone for.
Today I started by doing some very messy sketches of some poses, inspired by the research I carried out yesterday. I then chose my final pose! This can be seen below. I believe this pose will make asset creation simple, as it is a very simple pose that means I won't need to worry as much about fabric draping and shading when it comes time to create clothing assets.
Week 8: 18th March - 24th March 2024
Tuesday 19th March 2024
Artwork Creation - Body Base Colour
I carried on with asset creation today, starting by cleaning up the lines on my chosen sketch to make them easier to understand. I then went in and colour blocked the main body shape, making sure the outer edges of the shape were crisp.
The next step in creating the body base was to pick skin tones. I decided to go for 4 different shades for inclusivity - I want my game to appeal to a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, and I feel the four shades I picked work really nicely!
After picking these shades, I started shading the body base, switching between the lightest and darkest skin tones to make sure that the shading would work on all the skin tones - I decided to create a universal layer for shading rather then shading each skin tone individually, as I felt it would save a lot of time. Tomorrow I will be carrying on with the shading.
Wednesday 20th March 2024
Artwork Creation - Body Base Shading
Today I carried on from where I left off yesterday and finished shading the body base! Whilst the universal shading layer has cut off a lot of time, The process of defining different anatomical features has taken up a lot of time as I want my character to still have realistic proportions, although stylised.
Overall, I'm really pleased with the final result! I believe that it looks realistic, whilst also having a stylised look that I really like and feel is effective! To get an idea of what the face will look like, I created some simple eye shapes which I think look really nice! To improve this base, I believe I could have made the feet look more realistic, and made it feel more fluid as I feel it looks quite stiff.
Friday 22nd March 2024
Artwork Creation - Hair
Now that the body base is complete, I decided to move onto creating some different hairstyles for my game!
I knew I wanted the hair to be modular - this means having the hair be made up of multiple different pieces, which gives the player more choice of hairstyles over a single hair asset. When thinking about this system, I knew I wanted three different categories of hair assets: Fringe, main length, and extra stylings [ponytails, buns, etc]. I have decided to do five different assets for each of these categories, equalling 15 different assets for hair alone. Whilst I feel I could maybe downsize this amount later on, as I have a lot of work to complete, right now I feel confident that I can create these assets quite quickly.
Today I started by sketching out the fringe elements, experimenting with different parts, lengths, and styles, to get a varied amount of different assets. I have also started picking colours for the assets, although I'm still deciding how many colours I want to use due to time constraints [each asset will need to individually be colour blocked and cleaned up, so I want lots of different colours.] Over easter break I plan to carry on with asset creation, hopefully meaning that when I get back I'll have plenty of assets that can be implimented into my project!
Easter Break
