ISLAND FARM

If you don't already know about us, Island Farm is a living history site and active farm set in 1847. Here we tell the story of everyday life of Roanoke Islanders during the 19th century. We are home to the oldest, fully restored home on the Island -- The Etheridge Homeplace. Our mission is to educate and inspire curiosity about the history of Roanoke Island, and also, to teach life skills that connect people with the folkways and traditions of the Outer Banks -- one of which is farming.

Island Farm owns and manages five farm plots. Produce is grown using sustainable farming practices, and as best we can, by using 19th century farming tools and techniques.

We are seeking volunteers and other groups to participate in our education garden. The plot next to the windmill will be used to grow historic staple crops and we plan to use it as an educational tool. There is an opportunity to learn about and assist with planting, maintenance, soil amendments and harvesting/process as well as traditional farming principals. Island Farm staff will lead education and work days. In addition we are seeking volunteer help with weekly maintenance duties such as weeding and composting.
