MAKE UP
While nothing truly replicates the experience of a live performance or rehearsal, the points lost due to an excused absence may be made up. Please refer to Attendance Policies to determine what counts as an excused and unexcused absence.
Each performance, rehearsal and Music class meeting, will be assigned an A, B or C status based on the amount of time involved and magnitude of the event. There are projects listed under A, B and C from which you may choose depending on what type of event you missed. In this manner, the degree of make-up work will be consistent with that of the work missed.
Typically, Music rehearsals and normal combined rehearsals will be a “C”, combined dress rehearsals before a concert will be assigned a “B” and performances will be considered an “A” assignment. Other events will be assigned as they are scheduled.
Your choice and the due date must be discussed with Mr. Petrusaitis prior to beginning your project. These lists are not exhaustive - if you have a different idea for a make-up activity that is truly equal to the amount of time involved in preparing for and participating in a performance, please feel free to present it. Think it through clearly and propose it in a logical manner and it’s possible you can earn make up points doing something that’s more enjoyable for you!
Here are the lists of choices:
1) Research Paper
· Papers will be (5th) 1 page, (6th) 1½ pages, (7-8) 2 pages, (High School) 3-4 pages for a missed concert.
· Papers must represent original work and contain at least 2 references. It is very easy to tell if there are copied sections of text. Plagiarized work will not receive make up points.
· Papers will be due within 10 school days of the missed event. If a continued illness prevents the student from meeting this deadline, please notify Mr. Petrusaitis for other arrangements to be made.
Choose from these topics:
1. A composer represented in the music of the missed performance.
2. Choose a country other than the United States and explore the traditional choral music or the folk/instrumental music from that country within historical parameters agreed upon with Mr. Petrusaitis.
3. Choose a decade and explore the traditional (classical) and pop/folk music of that time
4. Think about a social issue that’s important to you. Find Broadway musicals that deal with this issue and write about its (their) history and reactions to the musical.
2) Concert Evaluation
In this case, you will attend a choral concert (at least 40 minutes in length) at the high school or above level. This would include high school, college/university, community or professional choir.
Guidelines and instructions for this activity are available from Mr. Petrusaitis. You will be turning in both handwritten notes and a typed evaluation/critique of the performance and a ticket stub or program from the concert.
3) Make up Performance/Music Analysis
Student will perform all pieces alone in a performance setting (Audience included)
The performance will be graded strictly on the "Elements of Music"
All music performed must be fully labeled including, note names, rests, fingerings (Band)/Sol Feg syllables (Choir), dynamics, and any other Music Symbols that exist on the page.
1. Research a music issue and write a short summary of the problems and solutions
2. Record your part for all the songs/pieces the class is preparing and turn it in
3. Make a 5 minute presentation to the class on a specific music technique agreed upon by Mr. P
4. Find a Music topic that you enjoy and write about its history and music.
5. Service project for the department (discuss and agree with Mr. Petrusaitis prior to starting)
1. Choose an article from an online source and summarize
2. Complete an https://music-theory-practice.com/ assignment assigned by Mr. Petrusaitis
3. Come in on your own time and work with Mr. P. 1 on 1
4. Complete vocabulary based on the pieces being rehearsed (See Mr. P.)
5. Don't forget about Classics for Kids!( <---Link Provided)
If you missed one of these assignments you'll need to listen to the Podcast and then e-mail/write down three things you learned from the episode. If you have any questions please see Mr. P.
The activity must completed within 7 calendar days of the missed rehearsal or performance.
