Oscar Joel Ramirez Benavidez, a native of Salinas, California, began his journey in Mexican folklórico dance at the age of 16. His passion led him to pursue higher education in the performing arts, earning an associate degree from Hartnell College and later a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from San José State University. Throughout his academic journey, Oscar took on leadership roles, serving as the Artistic Director for folklórico groups at both Hartnell College and California State University, Monterey Bay. His talent and dedication also earned him positions with prestigious dance groups, including Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol de San José State and Los Lupeños de San José.
Oscar's commitment to preserving and sharing Mexican folklórico extends beyond performance to education and community engagement. He has taught students from K-12 as a guest instructor for the Monterey Arts Council and currently directs the folklórico program at Alisal High School in Salinas. To enhance his skills and knowledge, Oscar has participated in various professional associations, including the Asociación Nacional de Grupos Folklóricos and Danzantes Unidos, and has taken master classes with instructors in Mexico. His teaching philosophy emphasizes not only proper technique and safety but also the historical and cultural context of the dances. With performances across California, Nevada, and Texas, Oscar continues to inspire and educate, keeping the rich tradition of Mexican folklórico alive in his community and beyond.
