Head's Headline

As we approach the end of an incredibly busy half term, it is the perfect opportunity to pause and reflect on the many events and successes within the St Clement Danes school community.

This month, we’ve hosted informative parent evenings for Key Stage 3 aimed at helping you stay connected with your child's educational journey. Additionally, Elevate Education provided a helpful parent webinar on supporting your child with effective time management, which was well-received. Following our highly successful Open Day, we also welcomed prospective parents for an Open Morning, allowing a glimpse into the daily operations of our school, which received fantastic feedback.

Our students have had the privilege of participating in a range of exciting trips this month. Year 10 and 12 Product Design students found inspiration during their visit to the Design Museum, where they were able to explore creative and innovative design ideas. Our Year 10 Fine Art students also enjoyed a visit to Tate Britain, which sparked their artistic creativity and allowed them to connect with some of the country’s finest works of art.

This week, Year 13 Geography students have been on their A Level field trip to Slapton, while A Level Physics students fly to Geneva tomorrow on their exciting trip to CERN, where they will explore one of the world’s leading scientific facilities. We eagerly await their return and look forward to hearing all about their experiences.

Some additional highlights from the past few weeks include our Tri-Golf Tournament and European Day of Languages which you can read more about in the news articles highlighted below.  I would like to personally say a special congratulations to Immy B for being awarded the prestigious Hertfordshire County Youth Choir Scholarship. We are incredibly proud of her achievement and the talent she brings to our school.

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff involved in organising and supervising the various trips, as they have generously given their time to create such beneficial and memorable experiences for our students.

Please can I remind parents to be more aware, respectful and considerate of where they park when dropping off or picking up their children. Sadly, parents are using the bus lane, blocking driveways and trying to enter the school car park. All of these actions impact upon the traffic, erodes our relationship with local residents and ultimately can put our students at risk when coming to school, as well as being a continuous frustration.  We do not underestimate the challenges of getting your children to school.  However, your children and the staff at St Clement Danes do our best to build a deserved reputation.  We would ask that you, as members of the wider St Clement Danes community, do what you can to ensure that reputation is not undermined.   Thank you for your support going forward next half term.

I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable half term holiday.

On This Day...

On 21st October 1947,  two sixth form boys visited the Gaumont British Film Studios in Elstree. C P Smaje wrote an account of the visit for the Dane magazine.

“The thing that impressed me most was the hospitality of the film workers who accepted the “Two Young Gentlemen from Saint Clement Danes”  and made us feel that we were welcome.

As our particular interest lay in the direction of sound production,  we were taken to see this first. It was pointed out to us that the main difference between full feature and documentary films was that whereas in the case of the former the sound was recorded at the time of shooting; in the latter case the soundtrack was added after completion.

We were able to inspect the sound recording machine or, as it is called, the Sound Camera and it was quite clear to us that the change over from silent films to talkies has made necessary considerable additions to the equipment which has to be carried around by the cameraman”.

The Anchor Fund

The Anchor Fund, established over 20 years ago by St Clement Danes School, enhances students' experiences from Year 7 to Year 13 by providing additional, high-quality resources that state funding cannot cover. Supported by regular parental donations, the fund has contributed hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years, enriching students' education through resources like Astroturf, science equipment, music keyboards, Chromebooks, and air fryers.

We need parents' help and support to continue enriching and enhancing our students' experience. Even a small monthly donation can make a significant difference. Please support the school by contributing to the Anchor Fund today.

Thanks to your generous donations, our Year 11 Drama students are now benefiting from Chromebooks provided by the Anchor Fund.

Parents Association News

After several recent fundraising activities, including providing refreshments at Open Day, SCDPA has just been able to approve several funding requests from teachers. Thanks to your support, this has included buying new textbooks for the MFL department for French, German and Spanish, a portable electric piano for the music department, English texts, some practical resources for business studies and some new bats and balls for the table tennis club that we helped set up last year and that has been very popular - and competition-winning - especially amongst the younger school years. As school budgets shrink, these resources are deeply appreciated by the school.

Our next fundraising activity is also great for other reasons too. The Winter Fair is on the morning of 16th November and is a unique opportunity to buy unusual and beautifully made gifts, eat delicious food, win big in the raffle and purchase second-hand school uniform. We will be sending out an email soon requesting donations both for the uinform sale and for the chocolate and bottle tombola. Please give as generously as you are able to, all our profits go directly back into resources for your children at school. There are also a few stall places still available, if you're  interested please email scdwintermarket@gmail.com

Many thanks for all your support
