Job description
Core Purpose:
To work with teachers as part of a professional team to support teaching and learning for a child with additional needs. Providing learning support to a child to help overcome barriers to learning, including severe and multiple learning difficulties and behavioural, social, communication, sensory disabilities.
Main duties and responsibilities
Implement planned learning activities/teaching programmes as agreed with the teacher/Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), adjusting activities according to pupils’ responses as appropriate
Participate in planning and evaluation of learning activities with the teacher, providing feedback to the teacher on pupil progress and behaviour
Support the teacher/SENCo in monitoring, assessing and recording pupil progress/activities
Provide feedback to pupil in relation to attainment and progress under the guidance of the teacher
Support learning by arranging/providing resources for lessons/activities under the direction of the teacher
Support in social and emotional well-being, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate
Ensure the pupil’s parents are kept fully up to date through regular telephone conversations and attendance at meetings are required
Liaise with outside agencies to adapt provision for pupils as needed
Share information about pupil with other internal and external agencies, as appropriate
Understand and support independent learning and inclusion of all pupils as required
Attend to pupil’s personal needs including toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating, as well as help with social, welfare and health matters, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate. Physically assist pupil in activities and movement between equipment
Learning Support Practitioners may also undertake some or all of the following:
Administer medication in accordance with an agreed plan under direction of healthcare practitioner and following appropriate training
Update pupil records
Assist with break-time supervision including facilitating games and activities
Assist with escorting pupils on educational visits to other settings
Support pupils in using basic ICT
Undertake safe moving and handling activities as required (training will be provided)
Work with other pupils on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by a therapist/care when directed by the teacher.
Safeguarding
Make sure pupils remain on the school premises during the midday break
Look out for any unidentified visitors approaching the school and follow the school’s procedures for approaching/reporting individuals
Add any other duties of particular relevance to your school

Supervision/Job Context
The post holder is managed on a day to day basis by the Phase Leader.
Contacts
The post holder will work with children, teachers and other LSPs, MSAs, the Senior Leadership Team and the Administration team of the school and the Trust. In addition, from time to time they will work with representatives from outside agencies, parents and carers, governors and staff from other settings that feed into the school.
