Core Purpose
To work with teachers to support teaching and learning by working with individuals
or small groups of learners under the direction of teaching staff, and may be responsible for some
learning activities within the overall teaching plan.
Responsibilities:
∙Implement the planned learning activities/teaching programmes as agreed with the teacher, adjusting activities according to learners’ responses as appropriate
∙Participate in the planning and evaluation of learning activities with the teacher, providing feedback to the teacher on pupil progress and behaviour
∙Support the teacher in monitoring, assessing and recording pupil progress/activities
∙Provide feedback to learners in relation to attainment and progress under the guidance of the teacher and when providing cover in the absence of the teacher
∙Support learning by arranging/providing resources for lessons/activities under the direction of the teacher and for the planned cover supervision of the class in the absence of the teacher
∙Support learners in self-regulation and social and emotional well-being, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate
∙Share information about learners with other staff, parents / carers, internal and external agencies, as appropriate
∙Understand and support independent learning and the inclusion of all learners as required
∙To provide short term cover as required e.g. covering the class whilst the teacher attends a meeting on an ad hoc basis.
•Provide cover supervision of classes (planned PPA and unplanned occasional sickness cover). Time will be given to prepare for this type of cover and the LSP is expected to give feedback to the teacher about the cover provided and how learners responded to teaching. These additional sessions will be paid at a fixed agreed session rate and claimed through completion of an overtime sheet, approved by the Headteacher.
Learning Support Practitioners may also undertake some or all of the following:
∙Work with individual learners and/or groups of learners with special educational needs
∙Work with learners for whom English is not their first language
∙Work with learners who are not working to the usual school timetable
∙Assist in the development of individual development plans for learners (such as special educational needs support plans)
∙Support the work of other adults in the classroom
∙Support the use of ICT in the curriculum
∙Invigilate exams and tests
∙Assist in escorting and supervising learners on educational visits and out of school activities
∙Select, prepare and clear away classroom materials and learning areas ensuring they are available for use, including developing and presenting displays
∙Support learners in developing and implementing their own personal and social development
∙Assist learners with eating, dressing and hygiene, as required, whilst encouraging independence
∙Monitor and manage stock and supplies for the classroom.

The post holder is required to be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection; health and safety; confidentiality; and data protection and report all concerns to an appropriate person.
