Core Purpose
We are seeking an Assistant Headteacher who is an excellent classroom practitioner with an ability to lead and develop outstanding teaching and learning.
Main duties and responsibilities
• Assist the Headteacher in leading and managing the school both operationally and strategically
• Undertake the professional duties of the Headteacher in their absence
• Work to promote inclusion for all children
• Provide leadership to a phase or Key Stage
• Contribute significantly to the direction of the School Improvement Plan
• Work closely with the Headteacher to ensure the school offers a high quality and engaging curriculum for its pupils
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
• Be responsible for the quality of the education of all pupils who are assigned to the post holder
• Assess, monitor, record and report on the learning needs, progress and achievements of assigned pupils having high expectations for all
• Have an excellent understanding of pedagogy to model best practice to colleagues across the school
• Have a clear understanding of the needs of all learners, including those with special educational needs, EAL, disabilities and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them
• Demonstrate an understanding of, and take responsibility for, promoting high standards of literacy including the confident use of spoken English (oracy)
• Work with the SLT and The Trust to evolve the curriculum offer
• Take a lead role in the coordination of the school’s assessment cycles
Behaviour, Safety and Pastoral Care
• Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people within the school, raising any concerns following school protocol/procedures
• Establish a safe, purposeful and stimulating environment for learners, rooted in mutual respect. Consistently use and model the school’s framework for behaviour management using a range of agreed strategies
• Have high expectations of behaviour, promoting self control and independence of all learners
• Promote effective class management, using approaches which are appropriate to learners’ needs in order to inspire, motivate and challenge learners
• Maintain good relationships with learners, exercise appropriate authority, and act decisively when necessary
• Be a positive role model and demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviour, which are expected of learners
• Carry out playground and other duties as directed and within the remit of the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document
Management, Team Working and Collaboration
• Take a lead in the school’s appraisal process
• Where appropriate, contribute to the recruitment, selection and appointment of staff
• Participate in relevant meetings/professional development opportunities
• Work as a team member and identify opportunities for working with colleagues and sharing the development of effective practice with them
• Contribute to the professional development of other teachers and support staff including the induction and assessment of new staff, teachers serving ECT periods and where appropriate, threshold assessments
• Ensure that colleagues working with you understand the roles they are expected to fulfil
• Cover for absent colleagues within the remit of the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document
Fulfil Wider Professional Responsibilities
• Work collaboratively with others to develop effective professional relationships
• Deploy support staff effectively
• Communicate effectively with parents/carers with regard to learners’ achievements and well-being using school systems/processes
• Communicate and co-operate with relevant external bodies
• Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school
Administration
• Participate in and carry out any administrative and organisational tasks within the remit of the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document
Professional Development
• Regularly review the effectiveness of your teaching and assessment procedures and the impact on learners’ progress, attainment and well-being, refining your approaches where necessary responding to advice and feedback from colleagues
• Be responsible for improving your teaching and leadership through participating fully in training and development opportunities identified by the school or as an outcome of your appraisal
• Proactively participate with arrangements made in accordance with the Appraisal Regulations 2012
