The AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics is designed to bridge the gap for high-achieving students by providing greater depth in higher-order mathematical skills, particularly in algebraic reasoning. This qualification offers meaningful stretch and challenge beyond the standard GCSE, preparing students to maximise their potential in Level 3 mathematics courses.
Intended as an additional qualification rather than a replacement for GCSE Mathematics, it builds upon the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study. The course explores key areas such as algebra and geometry in greater depth and breadth—foundational topics for advanced mathematical study.
The qualification places strong emphasis on technical accuracy, logical reasoning, and advanced problem-solving skills. Students are also introduced to new concepts such as calculus and matrices, while further developing their understanding of trigonometry, functions, and graphs. Aqa.org.uk. (2018).
The specification content is set out in six distinct topic areas although questions will be asked that range across these topics.
1 Number
2 Algebra
3 Coordinate Geometry (2 dimensions only)
4 Calculus
5 Matrix Transformations
6 Geometry
