“Mr. B was always there when you needed someone to talk to. If I was ever feeling down, I often caught myself in Chuck’s office talking about sports or anything to brighten up my day.” - Mr. Pridgeon

"Mr. Ballingall was always open to my ideas and suggestions. He was always so positive and approachable. I looked forward to our conversations about the Damien basketball team. Not to mention the jabs you would throw at the Cubs. I will miss you, Chuck." - Mr. Mora

“The past few years Mr. Ballingall would send me a personal email to recognize the success of the AP French students as soon as he received the results of the exam at the beginning of July. This was a typical gesture of Mr Ballingall, who always celebrated student's success. These emails would make me proud of my efforts on behalf of the school.” - Madame Lawson

"When I think of Mr. Ballingall, it is hard to find the perfect words to describe him. Words almost don't do him justice. He was Damien. Like the school, he was an institution. Every student, staff member, teacher, and parent knew him. He touched so many lives and was an inspiration to all. Damien was and is better because of him." -Mrs. Pasillas

“Mr. B was an icon here at Damien. You can still feel his presence all over the campus. Mr. B was influential in my teaching of AP Psychology and AP US History. He was a great mentor, and an even better friend. I will never forget the before school discussions many of us teachers and coaches would have with Chuck in his room. From politics to sports to food.......... we discussed and debated it all! Chuck you are missed.” - Mr. Gates

"Chuck Ballingall has been an indelible part of my life for the past 14 years of working at Damien High School. We became closer friends in the past 6 years as our jobs became more connected. We had a lot in common due to liking to work at school rather than at home. Also, we both preferred working at night than in the morning. I miss walking down the hallway in the 600 building and seeing him at the end in his office always with a smile and a 'hello'. I will miss driving a van along with Mr. Ballingall to the Mock Trial events in LA and chatting with him about just anything. I know I will still chat with him about anything but I will miss not hearing his iconic voice out-loud in answer. Chuck Ballingall will be greatly missed by all at Damien and I know we have been blessed to have known him." - Mrs. Curry

"Mr. Ballingall was my AP US History teacher. As a former student, I remember his command of the subject and how effortlessly he taught it to us as a class. As a colleague, I remember walking back onto this campus and seeing him in his classroom and thinking, 'Yes, that feels right.' As a friend, I remember the warmth with which he always greeted me and how our relationship will always be more than the sum of the words we exchanged. He is as much a part of this institution as any building on campus, and even more so. He will be greatly missed." - Mr. Arbizu

"Chuck exemplified what it meant to be a good teacher, friend, scholar, and man" - Mr. Freude

“Mr. Ballingall was a Joseph DeVeuster for Damien. He gave his life to Damien and its students. I will remember his joyous laugh and how he loved to laugh. He was one of the most intelligent men I have ever met. I could always count on him for a precis of the previous day's Dodger game. He had a great demeanor and attitude with our students.” - Mr. Mahon

“I graduated in 1981. Mr. Ballingall came to Damien in 1982. I Only got to know him when I returned as a faculty member in 2001. I spent 16 years as his colleague and friend. We enjoyed long, interesting discussions on political topics. We shared similar political ideologies, so we were in agreement most of the time. He was a dear friend. He will be missed.” - Mr. Patten

“It was always great to talk Dodger baseball with Chuck. We mostly did that in the mornings when he got to work.” - Mr. Pro

“Mr. Ballingall was a true example of what a mentor should be. It was an honor of mine to know him as a teacher and a colleague. He will be missed by many.” - Mr. Salabaj

“I consider myself blessed to have known Chuck in so many different ways. I knew him as a student, as a member of the varsity basketball team, as a colleague, as a Kairos leader, and most importantly as a friend. I will always cherish the times we spent talking basketball or giving each other grief after beating each other in fantasy football. Anytime I saw him, he would refer to me by my high school nickname, which just goes to show how much he cared for all of his students by remembering so much about them. His dedication to the thousands of young men that walked the halls of Damien is only surpassed by the imprint he left on so many lives. Even though he's gone, his memory will forever be a part of Damien High School.” - Mr. Truax

"I have lost someone I loved as a brother, as a closest friend, as a remarkable human being." - Mr. Coray

“Mr. B was a man of strong opinions and who was genial when listening to those who dissented from one or more of his opinions. He was a good listener and someone who enjoyed his life.” - Doc Williams

"Mr. Ballingall was synonymous with Damien itself. The loss of Mr B is the loss of part of the school. He will be missed incredibly." - Mr. Sims

“In the words spoken by Red, played by Morgan Freeman, in the film Shawshank Redemption: "I guess I just miss my friend." Thank you, Chuck, for our memorable journey.” - Mrs. Leduc

“Mr. Ballingall was an encyclopedia of knowledge. He listened to every word you said and provided wisdom in his feedback. During last year’s rice and beans project, Mr. Ballingall anonymously donated money to raise the total contributions to 1500. He was the type of guy who was generous with his time and finances.” - Mr. Geiger

“Mr. Ballingall was the debate team. He controlled the budget and created the possibility of a debate class on campus. He was the head coach, the team father, guidance counselor, comedian, historian, and cheerleader. I could go on and on. He was always someone I could talk to about anything and he was always willing to listen. He valued friendship and loyalty so much that it was always great to have time to talk to Mr. B. Whether it was in between classes, after school, eating out, or out at tournaments. Since Mr. B's passing I have almost texted him over a dozen times wanting to tell him about how are debaters are doing. There is no replacing Mr. B, not at Damien, in debate, or in our lives. All we can do is our best in all areas he excelled. Each day I ask myself, 'Is this good enough for Chuck'... Some days my answer has been yes, and some no. I’m constantly thinking how I can better the debate program to honor Chuck’s memory.” - Mr. Peters
