My Counseling Philosophy
My philosophy as a school counselor starts with building relationships with students within an environment that fosters nurturing and safety. My mission as a school counselor is to provide productive, beneficial counseling services to students to improve mental health and support academic achievement. I seek to promote mental health and student growth emotionally, socially, and academically. My personal philosophy is anti-deterministic, meaning, everyone has the ability to change and evolve with work and the right support behind them. I strive to be culturally competent in all aspects of my work. I will use my abilities as a school counselor to advocate for all students' success. I will also collaborate with all stakeholders including administrators, teachers, staff, parents and community members to ensure student success. In practice, I pull mostly from the theoretical approach of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy.
I believe that all students have a right to:
An all encompassing school counseling program that respects the uniqueness of each student.
Be treated with dignity no matter their cultural or ethnic background, gender, age, orientation, or social or economic status.
Receive information and support that will help them succeed mentally, emotionally and academically.
A safe environment at school without abuse, bullying, or harassment.
