Join the Lakewood Elementary school communitu in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, recognized from September 15 to October 15. This vibrant observance honors the rich cultural heritages, contributions, and histories of Hispanic and Latinx individuals who have shaped our nation and our world!
History:
Hispanic Heritage Month originated in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, enacted by Congress to acknowledge the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans. In 1988, it was expanded to a 30-day celebration, starting on September 15th, a date marking the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico's Independence Day follows on September 16th, and Chile's on September 18th.
Understanding the terms Hispanic and Latinx
The terms "Hispanic" and "Latinx" are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings:
Hispanic refers to individuals from Spanish-speaking countries or cultures, emphasizing their shared language and cultural heritage.
Latinx is a more inclusive term, encompassing people not only from Spanish-speaking countries but also those from Portuguese-speaking Brazil, French-speaking Haiti, and other nations in Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Latinx acknowledges the diversity within the Latino/Latina/Latine/Latinx community, including variations in language, culture, and identity.
Join the Celebration
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, our school will explore the vibrant traditions, achievements, and experiences of Hispanic and Latinx communities. We invite families to participate in this celebration by:
Learning about influential Hispanic and Latinx figures
Exploring traditional music, art, literature, and cuisine
Engaging in conversations about identity, culture, and community
Sharing your own heritage and traditions with us
By embracing this observance, we foster a more inclusive and culturally responsive environment, appreciating the richness that diversity brings to our school community.
Together, let's honor the contributions and spirit of Hispanic and Latinx Americans!
