Tier I Example

Carlton is the most talkative student Mrs. Johnson has ever encountered. Every morning he comes to class talking about his exciting night - the shows he watched, or restaurants his family visited, or the video games he played. But, whenever it comes to to talk about the story he read during his independent reading time, Carlton clams up. Carlton seems to mentally wander when he reads, so Mrs. Johnson decided to include books that would be of particular interest to him.

Tier II Example

Vignette

Mr. McGruder is a veteran teacher in an urban school serving a largely multicultural population. For a six-weeks unit on civil rights, he selected a poetic, repetitious text for fluency practice. Mr. McGruder introduced the students to the poem during a read-aloud, engaged the students in a thoughtful discussion about the elements of the poem, and explicitly taught the class why the poet selected certain words for the text. He also had all of the students participate in repeated readings, a common research-based strategy for developing fluency.

Tier III Example

Vignette

Following the nine week Tier II intervention period, progress monitoring results based on oral reading fluency showed that three of the four students in Mr. McGruder's small group had made sufficient progress. One child, Amy, had made minimal progress and continued to lag behind her peers. Mr. McGruder scheduled a meeting with the campus Student Support Team (SST) and Amy's parents to discuss more intensive intervention and possibly seek support from the district's central staff departments.
